What we've verified for Mauritius

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Mauritius, updated 18 May 2026: 90 days for EU citizens, six-month passport, reported passports, Mauritius All in One form, booking required by airlines, cyclones, medium-risk areas); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mauritius (UK Government: end-date stamp, return ticket, digital form, malaria blood sample, Ebola restrictions); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: mra.mu (Mauritius Revenue Authority: "Allowances", with the three options in force since 1 September 2025, and "FAQs Customs", with the red channel for more than 500,000 rupees, 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Mauritius rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of them. Travellers arriving from a country where malaria is common may be asked for a blood sample at the airport or later during their stay.

Customs limits

Cash
There is no limit on bringing cash in or out, but anyone carrying cash, bearer instruments (cheques, travellers' cheques), precious stones or metals or other high-value goods worth more than 500,000 Mauritian rupees must use the red channel and declare them.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over, choosing only one of these options since 1 September 2025: 250 grams of tobacco with 1 litre of spirits and 2 litres of wine or beer; 250 grams of tobacco with 2 litres of spirits and no wine or beer; or 250 grams of tobacco with 4 litres of wine or beer and no spirits. Anything above that pays duty, excise and VAT.
Tobacco
Aged 18 and over: 250 grams of tobacco in total, counting cigars and cigarettes, under any of the three allowance options (see alcohol).

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport reported lost and cancelled, even if recovered.
  • No return or onward ticket.
  • Having been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or South Sudan in the previous 21 days without a residence or work permit.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Port Louis, Grand Baie, or Curepipe?

No. Mauritius sets the requirements, so entering through Port Louis asks for the same as entering through Grand Baie or Curepipe. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Mauritius

Mauritius has two properties on the World Heritage List, both tied to its history of forced labour. Aapravasi Ghat, in Port Louis, is the immigration depot through which hundreds of thousands of indentured labourers, mostly from India, arrived from 1834 to replace slaves on the sugar plantations. The Le Morne cultural landscape, a mountain above the sea in the south-west, was a refuge for runaway slaves. The coast has reef-protected lagoons, with Grand Baie in the north and Flic en Flac in the west as the main tourist areas. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises care with bags in those two areas and in markets, warns of accidents caused by speedboats near swimmers and notes that the cyclone season runs from November to April.
