What we've verified for Micronesia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 3 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: visit-micronesia.fm (official tourism website of the Federated States of Micronesia, "Regulations": passport validity, CIQ form, entry permit, onward ticket, vaccinations, prohibitions); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Micronesia, updated 8 April 2026: 30 days visa-free, extension, departure tax, currency, laws, driving); eur-lex.europa.eu (EU-Micronesia short-stay visa waiver agreement, 22016A1025(01), provisional application); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/federated-states-of-micronesia (UK Government: 120 days' validity, departure tax). All checked on 3 October 2026. The alcohol and tobacco allowances could not be confirmed against an official source.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Micronesia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever, cholera and smallpox: the certificate is only required from travellers arriving from an affected region.

Customs limits

Cash
Amounts of 10,000 US dollars or more must be declared to customs on entry and exit.

Overstay penalties

Staying longer requires an extension from the local immigration office, which can take time; Spain's Foreign Ministry mentions up to 60 more days. Studying or working for more than 30 days requires an entry permit applied for before arrival.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less validity than required.
  • Having no ticket out of the country.
  • Arriving to work or study without an entry permit.
What to do if you are refused entry →

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

IATI sells its policies according to the country you live in. Where do you live?

Do you need a different visa for Palikir, Kolonia, or Weno?

No. Micronesia sets the requirements, so entering through Palikir asks for the same as entering through Kolonia or Weno. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Micronesia

Nan Madol, off the coast of Pohnpei, joined the World Heritage List in 2016: around a hundred artificial islets built from basalt columns and coral boulders, with the remains of stone palaces, temples, tombs and houses. It was the ceremonial centre of the Saudeleur dynasty between the 13th and 16th centuries. It was inscribed at the same time on the List of World Heritage in Danger, mainly because of silting in its waterways. Spain's Foreign Ministry warns that flights are often cancelled, that medical facilities are very limited and that travellers should protect themselves from mosquitoes because of dengue and Zika.
