Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Micronesia, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Authorisation system

Customs, Immigration & Quarantine Form (CIQ)

Micronesia requires no visa for visits of up to 30 days. On arrival travellers hand in the CIQ form, which the airline distributes before landing. Staying longer than 30 days needs an entry permit, which the Division of Immigration and Labor can grant for up to 60 more days. EU citizens are also covered by the visa waiver agreement signed with the EU in 2016, which allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period and has been applied provisionally since then. Each state has its own checks: flying between Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae means clearing immigration and showing the passport at every arrival.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least 120 days from entry, according to the official tourism website and the UK Government (Spain's Foreign Ministry asks for 180 days).
  • Return or onward ticket to a country the passport allows entry to.
  • CIQ form completed before arrival.
  • Cash for the 20-dollar departure tax paid when leaving each island: airports have no cash machines and do not take cards.

Transit rules

Importing controlled substances and weapons is prohibited, and plants and animals need prior approval and quarantine. Drug penalties, marijuana included, are severe, and public drunkenness is a serious offence in Yap. It is illegal to keep objects taken from Second World War wrecks. The speed limit is 40 km/h in most places and 15 km/h near schools. Anyone travelling with a child who is not theirs needs a certificate from the legal guardian, and private vessels must notify Immigration 72 hours in advance.
