What we've verified for Taiwan

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Taiwan, updated 17 March 2026: six-month passport, onward ticket, 90 days visa-free, extension, 180 days, fine and deportation, vaccines, earthquakes, typhoons, safety); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/taiwan (UK Government: TWAC within three days before arrival, exemptions, animal products and African swine fever, declaration of NTD 100,000 or USD 10,000); immigration.gov.tw (Taiwan National Immigration Agency); data.unesco.org (Taiwan does not appear on the World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: web.customs.gov.tw (Taiwan Customs Administration, "What are the relevant regulations for inbound passengers carrying tobacco or liquor into Taiwan?": allowances, ages and import licence, 25 September 2026). boca.gov.tw (Bureau of Consular Affairs: eVisa fee and the nationalities that receive it free, page updated 2 March 2026, checked 10 October 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Taiwan rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No mandatory vaccines for entry, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The local authorities recommend the Japanese encephalitis vaccine in summer and the flu vaccine in winter.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash or travellers' cheques over 100,000 New Taiwan dollars (NTD) or 10,000 US dollars must be declared. Customs gives you a certified declaration; without it the money can be held when you leave.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over: up to 1.5 litres of alcoholic drinks duty-free, with no limit on the number of bottles, of which no more than 1 litre may be controlled alcohol from mainland China. Above 5 litres of alcohol an import licence is required; without it the goods cannot be brought in.
Tobacco
Aged 20 and over: 200 cigarettes, or 25 cigars, or one pound (about 450 grams) of tobacco, or 200 tobacco products approved by the Ministry of Health. Above 1,000 cigarettes an import licence is required. No animal products may be brought in without authorisation: fines are heavy and checks have been stepped up because of African swine fever.

Overstay penalties

Staying longer than the time granted is punished with a fine and can end in deportation, with possible future entry restrictions, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UK Government. The amount could not be confirmed against Taiwan's immigration law.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with six months' validity or less.
  • No ticket out of the country.
  • Not having submitted the arrival card (TWAC).
  • Bringing in animal products without authorisation.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Taipei, Kaohsiung, or Taichung?

No. Taiwan sets the requirements, so entering through Taipei asks for the same as entering through Kaohsiung or Taichung. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Taiwan

Taiwan does not appear on the World Heritage List because it is not a UNESCO member. Taipei has the National Palace Museum, holding much of the Chinese imperial collections, temples such as Longshan and its night markets. Beyond the capital, Taroko Gorge on the east coast, Sun Moon Lake and the Alishan mountains are the most visited landscapes, and Tainan, the old capital, keeps 17th and 18th-century temples and forts. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports no public safety problems. It does note that the island is in a highly seismic zone, that the 2024 earthquake damaged Taroko National Park, which has only partly reopened, and that typhoons often arrive from June to October.
