What we've verified for Moldova

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2026-09-17). The specifics depend on your nationality — open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: border.gov.md (Border Police of the Republic of Moldova — "Condiţiile de călătorie a cetăţenilor străini în Republica Moldova": entry conditions under Article 6 of Law 200/2010 on the regime of foreigners, documents justifying the purpose of the trip under Law 215/2011 on the state border, and minimum means of subsistence from the annex to Government Decision No. 332 of 5 May 2011; verified via direct fetch); customs.gov.md (Customs Service — "Introducerea și scoaterea mărfurilor": tobacco, alcohol and personal baggage allowances, written declaration obligation and the €10,000 currency threshold; verified via direct fetch); Contravention Code of the Republic of Moldova, Article 333 (fine for breaching the rules of stay; figures taken from information published by the General Inspectorate for Migration, igm.gov.md, whose FAQ page no longer responds, and not re-validated against legis.md, which blocks fetching); exteriores.gob.es (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advice for Moldova: entry with national ID or passport, the European Health Insurance Card not being valid, currency, vaccines, warning about Transnistria); whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List) (checked 17 September 2026).

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Do you need a different visa for Chisinau, Balti, or Cahul?

No. Moldova sets the requirements, so entering through Chisinau asks for the same as entering through Balti or Cahul. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Moldova

Moldova is the least visited country in Europe and that is exactly its appeal: vineyards, cave monasteries and a capital with no queues. The axis is wine. Cricova and Mileștii Mici, on the outskirts of Chisinau, are underground cities of galleries cut into limestone — tens of kilometres you tour by car or on a little train — and Mileștii Mici is in the Guinness book as the world's largest wine collection; both have been on UNESCO's tentative list since 2025. The country's only inscribed World Heritage site is the Struve Geodetic Arc (2005), a chain of 19th-century triangulation points spread across ten countries, of which Moldova keeps one stretch. Beyond wine, Orheiul Vechi is the landscape not to miss: a deep meander of the Răut river with an Orthodox monastery carved into the cliff, still inhabited by monks, and remains of Getic, Tatar and medieval settlements. Chisinau keeps Soviet architecture and wide parks; Soroca, to the north, a circular medieval fortress above the Dniester. Transnistria, the strip east of the river, operates de facto as a separate state with its own authorities and its own currency: Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises avoiding it, and it is not a place your embassy can easily get you out of if something goes wrong.
