What you need to enter Moldova with a Brazilian passport

Fee

There is no visa fee for a Spanish passport: the exemption covers stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. What you do have to be able to show at the border is means of subsistence: the minimum required is 30 euros per day of stay and, in any case, no less than 300 euros for stays shorter than 10 days (annex to Government Decision No. 332 of 5 May 2011).

Required documents

• A valid travel document recognized or accepted by the Republic of Moldova. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Spanish travellers may enter with either the national ID card or the passport, and recommends carrying both, kept in different places.
• Documents justifying the purpose of the trip. The Border Police may ask for them: for tourism, a tourist voucher, proof of hotel accommodation, an invitation from the host stating the address, confirmation of a package tour booking or a return or round-trip ticket all count.
• Proof of means of subsistence for the stay and for the return: 30 euros per day, with a minimum of 300 euros if the stay is shorter than 10 days.
• Not being subject to an entry ban (Article 9 of Law 200/2010) or having been declared an undesirable person (Article 55), and not representing a danger to national security, public order or public health.

Vaccinations

• No vaccinations are required to enter Moldova. Tetanus, hepatitis and typhoid are recommended, plus rabies vaccination in case of a dog bite.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. On entry and on exit, the Border Police check how many days you have spent in Moldova without a visa in the 180 days before the date of the check. Entry is through any border crossing point open to international traffic. Important warning: the area east of the Dniester river — Transnistria — is outside the effective control of the Moldovan authorities and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises avoiding it; anyone entering the country on that side may end up without a valid entry stamp and with problems when leaving through a crossing controlled by Chisinau. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid in Moldova, so it is worth carrying insurance covering medical costs and repatriation even though it is not a border requirement.

Customs limits

Cash

The traveller's customs declaration form is mandatory above €10,000 in currency values; below that figure declaring is voluntary. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that currency may be brought in without limit if declared, and that less than €10,000 in cash may be taken out of the country.

Alcohol

Allowance of the Moldovan Customs Service: 1 litre in total of drinks over 22% ABV (or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% or more), or 2 litres of drinks up to 22%, or any proportional combination of the two; plus 2 litres of still wine and 5 litres of beer.

Tobacco

Allowance of the Moldovan Customs Service: 200 cigarettes, 200 tobacco refills for heating devices, 50 cigars, 50 cigarillos or 250 grams of smoking tobacco. The rest of personal baggage enters duty-free up to €300 per person by land and €430 by air or sea.

Overstay penalties

Failing to leave the country when the authorized period expires is an offence under Article 333 of the Contravention Code: a fine of 12 to 30 conventional units (the conventional unit is 50 lei, i.e. roughly 600 to 1,500 lei) plus a return decision. There is one important escape valve: no penalty is applied to anyone who leaves Moldova voluntarily within 15 days of the deadline expiring. If the irregular stay exceeds three months, Articles 9 and 10 of Law 200/2010, which govern entry bans, apply. The amounts come from information published by the General Inspectorate for Migration, whose page is no longer reachable and which we could not re-validate against the official text of the Code.

Common reasons for denial

• Not holding a valid travel document recognized or accepted by the Republic of Moldova.
• Not presenting documents justifying the purpose of entry or the existence of sufficient means for the stay and for the return to the country of origin (30 euros per day, minimum 300).
• When in transit, not presenting guarantees that entry into the destination country will be allowed or that Moldovan territory will be left.
• Being subject to an entry ban (Article 9 of Law 200/2010) or having been declared undesirable (Article 55).
• Representing a danger to national security, public order or public health.
