What we've verified for Monaco

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 2 October 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Monaco, updated 4 June 2026: free movement with France, passport or ID card, no visa or vaccinations); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/monaco (UK Government: France handles immigration and customs, passport validity, 90-day rule, entry checks, cash, meat and milk); Directive 2007/74/EC (allowances for travellers from third countries); data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 2 October 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Monaco rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No vaccinations are required, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Customs limits

Cash
France runs Monaco's customs. Cash or traveller's cheques worth 10,000 euros or more must be declared; if you do not, the money could be seized when you leave.
Alcohol
French customs rules apply, which are the EU's. Coming from another EU country there is no allowance to count for personal use. From outside the EU: 1 litre of drinks over 22% or 2 litres under, 4 litres of still wine and 16 of beer (Directive 2007/74/EC).
Tobacco
From outside the EU: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco (Directive 2007/74/EC). Meat, milk and products containing them cannot be brought in.

Overstay penalties

Because days in Monaco count towards the Schengen limit, going over 90 days is treated as an irregular stay in Schengen, which can lead to a return decision and an entry ban recorded in the Schengen Information System. The amount of any fine could not be confirmed against an official source.

Grounds for refusal

  • Not holding a Schengen visa when your nationality requires one.
  • A passport issued more than ten years ago or expiring less than three months after leaving Schengen.
  • Having already used the 90 days of the 180-day period.
  • Being unable to show accommodation, a return ticket or financial means at the entry check.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Monaco, Monte Carlo, or La Condamine?

No. Monaco sets the requirements, so entering through Monaco asks for the same as entering through Monte Carlo or La Condamine. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Monaco

Monaco has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is the world's second-smallest State, squeezed between the French Riviera and the Maritime Alps, and can be walked in a day. Visitors usually climb up to the Rock, the old town with the Prince's Palace, stroll around the harbour and Monte Carlo with its casino, and visit the Oceanographic Museum, perched above the sea. Once a year the streets become the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit, and prices and occupancy soar on those days. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags no risk areas: the usual precautions of any very touristy place are enough.
