Verified practical details
You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:
Authorisation system
No border control of its own: Schengen rules apply through France
Monaco is not part of the Schengen area, but it has free movement with France, its only neighbour, and by extension with the rest of Schengen. France handles its immigration: you arrive through France, and anyone who needs a visa applies for a Schengen visa. Days in Monaco count towards the 90-days-in-any-180 limit of the Schengen area. To stay longer, work or study you must meet France's entry requirements; time on a residence permit or long-stay visa does not count towards that limit.
Fee
€90
The 90 euros are the short-stay Schengen visa fee (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 16, as amended by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1415). Children aged 6 to 12 pay 45 euros and those under 6 pay nothing. Visa-exempt travellers pay nothing.
Processing time
The consulate decides the Schengen visa within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable to 45 (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 23). It can be applied for no earlier than six months before the trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before.
Required documents
- A passport meeting Schengen rules: issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area. EU citizens enter with their national ID card.
- A Schengen visa, if your nationality requires one.
- At the Schengen entry check you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return or onward ticket and enough money for the stay.
Transit rules
Schengen rule: no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, adding up days in Monaco and in any Schengen State. Days spent in Schengen in the 180 days before the trip also count. There are no passport checks between France and Monaco.
