Mongolia rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No vaccination is required for entry, including yellow fever. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers travel insurance with broad medical cover essential.
Customs limits
- Cash
- By law all payments are made in local currency, the tugrik.
- Alcohol
- Drinking alcohol in public places is prohibited.
Overstay penalties
For stays over 90 days you must deregister with the Immigration Agency and obtain an exit visa before leaving; failing to do so can lead to a fine and a ban on leaving Mongolia. No official source was found giving a daily overstay fine.
Grounds for refusal
- A passport valid for six months or less, or reported lost or stolen.
- Travelling for a purpose other than tourism without a visa or an invitation processed by the Immigration Agency.
- Trying to cross at a land border point not open to foreigners.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Ulaanbaatar, Erdenet, or Darkhan?
No. Mongolia sets the requirements, so entering through Ulaanbaatar asks for the same as entering through Erdenet or Darkhan. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Mongolia
Mongolia has seven properties on the World Heritage List, nearly all tied to the steppe and its ancient peoples: the Orkhon Valley cultural landscape (2004), the petroglyphs of the Mongolian Altai (2011), the sacred mountain of Burkhan Khaldun (2015), the Bronze Age deer stone monuments (2023) and, since 2026, the cemetery complexes of the Xiongnu nobility. The other two are natural, the Uvs Nuur Basin (2003) and the Landscapes of Dauria (2017). Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends extra care on adventure trips through desert, steppe, mountains or forest, where phone coverage is absent or patchy, hiring a guide to leave the capital because of poor roads, and notes that winters last about eight months, with temperatures down to minus 30 degrees.
