Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Mongolia, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
Temporary tourist visa exemption (30 days) or electronic visa
Under a decision of the Government of Mongolia of 31 December 2025, nationals of 34 countries may enter visa-free for tourism, for up to 30 days, between 1 January and 31 December 2026. According to the Embassy of Mongolia in Paris, the exemption also covers cultural and sporting events, filming and transit. Work, study or long stays require a visa, and anyone travelling for a purpose other than tourism needs a person or organisation in Mongolia to apply to the Immigration Agency beforehand. The electronic visa (eVisa) is still available, and the Immigration Agency replies within three days; biometric data are taken on landing at Chinggis Khaan airport.
Apply on the official site →Required documents
- Passport valid for more than six months; entry is refused on a passport reported lost or stolen.
- Make sure the border officer stamps the passport: without a stamp there may be problems on departure.
- Adults travelling with children who are not their own: original notarised letter from the parents or legal guardian.
- Registration with the Immigration Agency: hotels or landlords do it through an app, and independent travellers must do it online.
Transit rules
A transit visa can also be requested at the border by travellers arriving from a European country without Mongolian representation, with an onward air or rail ticket, and allows stays of up to 10 days. The 30-day tourist stay can be extended by another 30 days by applying to the Immigration Office at least five days before it expires. Only a few land crossings are open to foreigners, and border zones, up to 100 kilometres inland, require permission from the State Frontier Guard Authority.
