What we've verified for Mozambique

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Mozambique, updated 13 March 2026: six-month passport and two pages, Decree 10/2023, entry permit on the eVisa platform since 11 February, receipt, originals, minors, yellow fever, Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mozambique (UK Government: electronic authorisation of about USD 47, five working days, no payment at the border, accommodation and funds, land crossings, Lebombo, polio, declaration of 10,000 meticais and USD 5,000); evisa.gov.mz (Mozambique eVisa portal); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/mozambique (processing of at least five working days, re-read on 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Mozambique rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age who have been in a country with risk of transmission in the previous three months, and from those who have spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport in one of them, for example Addis Ababa. The authorities at Maputo airport may vaccinate on the spot as a condition of entry. Polio vaccination is also required in some circumstances.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash in meticais from 10,000 must be declared, as must foreign currency or travellers' cheques worth 5,000 US dollars or more.

Overstay penalties

The penalty for staying beyond 30 days could not be confirmed against Mozambican law. What Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs does warn is that without the entry permit receipt you must pay again and fines may be added.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than six months' validity or without two blank pages.
  • Arriving without having applied and paid for the entry permit on the eVisa platform.
  • Minors without the birth certificate or notarised consent.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Maputo, Beira, or Nampula?

No. Mozambique sets the requirements, so entering through Maputo asks for the same as entering through Beira or Nampula. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Mozambique

Mozambique has two properties on the World Heritage List. The Island of Mozambique, off the coast of Nampula, was the capital of the Portuguese colony and keeps the fortress of São Sebastião, churches and its stone-and-lime town. iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Maputo National Park, shared with South Africa, protect lakes, mangroves and turtle-nesting beaches. The country has around 2,500 kilometres of coast, with the Bazaruto archipelago and Tofo, known for diving with whale sharks. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges extreme caution throughout the trip and advises against travel to Cabo Delgado, eastern Niassa and northern Nampula because of armed group violence; it also recommends comprehensive health insurance with evacuation cover.
