Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Mozambique, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorisation system
Mandatory electronic entry permit (eVisa) for visa-exempt travellers
Decree 10/2023 exempts ordinary passport holders from the countries it lists from a visa for tourism or business of up to 30 days. Even so, since the eVisa platform was launched on 11 February, they too must apply online for an entry permit at least five working days before travel and pay for it there and then, because payment is not possible at the border. The receipt must be kept and shown on entry and exit; without it you pay again and risk fines. For British travellers the UK Government puts it at about 47 US dollars, a 37-dollar fee plus 650 meticais for processing. For any other purpose of travel a visa is needed, requested at a Mozambican embassy or through the eVisa portal.
Apply on the official site →Processing time
The entry permit is applied for on the eVisa platform at least five working days before travel; processing can take at least those five days, according to the UK Government and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Required documents
- Passport valid for at least six months with two blank pages; otherwise entry is refused. ID cards are not accepted.
- Entry permit applied for and paid on the eVisa platform, with the receipt printed.
- Proof of accommodation, return or onward ticket and sufficient funds, which may be requested at the border.
- Always carry the original passport: police can detain anyone who only shows photocopies. A certified copy of the passport and entry stamp is useful.
- Under-18s: a full birth certificate showing both parents and, if travelling with one parent or none, a notarised consent less than three months old.
Transit rules
Not all land crossings open 24 hours a day and they can close without notice. The Lebombo-Ressano Garcia crossing with South Africa has long waits in holiday periods, and there have been armed robberies in the queue on the South African side, mainly after dark.
