What we've verified for North Macedonia

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 25 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs for North Macedonia, updated 12 June 2026: three-month passport or ID card, 90-day exemption, insurance not compulsory, registration within 12 and 48 hours, declaration of 10,000 euros and 120,000 denars, cash payments over 500 euros, earthquakes, fog, northern border areas); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/north-macedonia (UK Government: 90-day validity, registration within 48 hours and deregistration 24 hours before leaving, penalties, Kosovo stamps); sanidad.gob.es ("Listado de países") and who.int (WHO): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 25 September 2026. Also: customs.gov.mk (Customs Administration of North Macedonia, "Goods which you do not have to declare": tobacco and alcohol allowances and minimum age, 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

North Macedonia rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No mandatory vaccines for entry. North Macedonia does not ask any traveller for a yellow fever certificate, wherever they arrive from, according to the list the WHO publishes under the International Health Regulations.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash over 10,000 euros or 120,000 Macedonian denars per person must be declared on entry or exit. Customs issues a certificate to show when leaving with more than 10,000 euros; otherwise the excess can be held or confiscated. Within the country it is illegal to pay more than 500 euros in cash. Declaring valuable jewellery, cameras and laptops is recommended.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over, duty-free: 1 litre of drinks over 22% or 2 litres at 22% or under, plus 2 litres of wine.
Tobacco
Aged 18 and over, duty-free: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, or an equivalent combination.

Overstay penalties

Failing to register can bring a fine, detention and a court hearing, and restrictions on returning to the country, according to the UK Government. The Spanish Embassy warns that exceeding the legal stay without first contacting the Ministry of the Interior exposes you to regulatory penalties, without giving a figure, and the amount could not be confirmed against the Macedonian Foreigners Act.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than 90 days' validity on arrival.
  • A document reported lost or stolen that was not notified to the police when recovered.
  • Having previously exceeded the legal stay or failed to register with the police.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Skopje, Ohrid, or Bitola?

No. North Macedonia sets the requirements, so entering through Skopje asks for the same as entering through Ohrid or Bitola. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to North Macedonia

North Macedonia has two properties on the World Heritage List. The main one is the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region, shared with Albania: one of the oldest lakes in Europe and a town of Byzantine churches and icons, with the monastery of St Naum on the shore. The other is the primeval beech forests, shared with 17 other countries. Skopje, the capital, rebuilt after the 1963 earthquake, and the Ottoman bazaar beside the stone bridge over the Vardar are the other usual stop. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags no high-risk areas; it advises caution in the northern border areas and notes that the country is in an earthquake zone.
