Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter North Macedonia, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Authorisation system

Visa exemption up to 90 days (no advance formality)

North Macedonia is not part of the Schengen area: days spent there do not count towards the Schengen 90 days, or vice versa. Anyone who expects to exceed the legal stay should go to the Ministry of the Interior beforehand.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for more than three months; the UK Government asks for it to expire at least 90 days after arrival.
  • Registration with the police where you stay. Hotels do it within 12 hours of arrival and usually give you a certificate; in private accommodation the host has 48 hours. Anyone who registers themselves must deregister 24 hours before leaving the country. Registration can also be done online.
  • Travel insurance is not compulsory for EU and Schengen citizens entering with their ID card, although it is recommended.

Transit rules

Serbia has refused entry to travellers leaving North Macedonia with Kosovo stamps in their passport. The usual route between Kosovo and Serbia without a prior Serbian stamp runs through North Macedonia itself. In winter, fog around Skopje can delay or cancel flights.
