What we've verified for Oman

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: fm.gov.om (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Oman, "Entry visas": 14-day exemption, the two groups of countries and the conditions in the regulations; and "Oman introduces free 14-day tourist visa": amendment to the regulations of the Foreign Residence Law); evisa.rop.gov.om (Royal Oman Police, electronic visa portal); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Oman: passport and green booklet, 14-day exemption, 10-rial daily fine, transit, 6,000-rial declaration, allowances, alcohol, medicines, risk areas); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/oman/entry-requirements (UK Government: 500-rial cap, border checks, yellow fever from Rwanda and Tanzania); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Oman rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from anyone arriving from a country with risk of transmission, and from those who have had layovers of more than 12 hours at airports in those countries. The WHO sets the minimum age at 9 months and Spain's Ministry of Health list at 1 year. The UK Government adds that it is also required from travellers arriving from Rwanda or Tanzania.

Customs limits

Cash
There are no restrictions on bringing currency in or out, but amounts equal to or above 6,000 Omani rials must be declared.
Alcohol
According to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2 litres or 2 bottles of alcoholic drinks are allowed, only for non-Muslims over 21. Alcohol may only be drunk in licensed hotels and venues, and drinking in public is prohibited.
Tobacco
From the same source: 600 cigarettes. E-cigarettes are illegal, both to import and to use.

Overstay penalties

Staying without a valid visa or beyond the authorised period is punished with a fine of 10 Omani rials per day, paid on leaving the country. According to the UK Government, the total is capped at 500 rials, and the authorities may also detain the offender.

Grounds for refusal

  • Failing any condition of the exemption: return ticket, confirmed hotel, health insurance or funds.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity, a provisional passport or only a national ID card.
  • Belonging to the second group of countries without residence in, or a valid visa for, the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK, Schengen, Japan or the Gulf.
  • The Omani authorities may refuse a visa without giving reasons and without refunding the fee.
  • Carrying medicines containing psychotropics without prior authorisation from the Omani Ministry of Health: some medicines common in Europe are illegal in Oman.

Do you need a different visa for Muscat, Salalah, or Sohar?

No. Oman sets the requirements, so entering through Muscat asks for the same as entering through Salalah or Sohar. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Oman

Oman combines mountains, desert and coast without the skyscraper scale of its neighbours, and five World Heritage sites tell its story. Bahla Fort (1987), built of mud brick, dominates an oasis at the foot of the Hajar mountains; the sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn (1988) preserve towers and tombs from the third millennium BC; and the aflaj (2006), the irrigation channels that still carry water to the palm groves, explain how people have lived inland for centuries. In Dhofar, in the south, the Land of Frankincense (2000) brings together the trees and the ports from which the resin was exported, and on the eastern coast lie the ruins of the ancient city of Qalhat (2018). Between September and March torrential rain can arrive, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against driving or camping in wadis when storms threaten; in summer the monsoon affects Dhofar. The same Ministry currently regards every area of the country as a risk area because of the regional conflict, and asks visitors to dress modestly and avoid camping or hiking alone.
