Pakistan rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- There is no yellow fever risk in Pakistan, but an international vaccination certificate IS required for anyone arriving from a country with risk of transmission (WHO list: most of Sub-Saharan Africa and several South American countries) or who has transited more than 12 hours through an airport in one of those countries.
Customs limits
- Cash
- There is no declared limit on entering with foreign currency, but above US$10,000 (or equivalent) it must be declared to customs. On leaving the country, the limit for taking out foreign currency is also US$10,000; for Pakistani rupees (PKR) the exit limit is PKR 10,000. This figure could not be to fbr.gov.pk (the page doesn't offer the detail in plain text); several specialised travel sources converge on it.
- Alcohol
- Importing alcoholic beverages is entirely prohibited for residents and non-residents alike, regardless of nationality: no personal allowance is admitted. Bringing alcohol in luggage is illegal: it can be confiscated and lead to a penalty.
- Tobacco
- 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars duty-free for adults 18+, per converging travel sources (not confirmed against fbr.gov.pk).
Overstay penalties
Anyone who stays beyond their visa's validity must obtain an "Exit Permit" through the Pakistan Online Visa System before they can leave the country: up to one year of overstay is processed online, more than a year requires a manual procedure. The fee isn't fixed: it's calculated by nationality and days of overstay through an official tool (a general amount could not be confirmed). Once issued, the exit permit is valid for 15 days to leave the country.
Grounds for refusal
- Your antecedents justifying the apprehension that your presence in Pakistan would be prejudicial to the country’s interests: the application is rejected outright.
- The authority may refuse the online visa service to any person without giving a reason, in particular to prevent fraud or anti-state activity or to comply with applicable law.
- Worth bearing in mind even with a granted visa: the final decision on entry rests with the immigration officer at the port of entry, who can refuse it despite a valid visa.

Do you need a different visa for Karachi, Lahore, or Islamabad?
No. Pakistan sets the requirements, so entering through Karachi asks for the same as entering through Lahore or Islamabad. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Pakistan
Pakistan packs four civilizations into a manageable territory: the Indus valley, the western Himalaya, the Mughal empire and the Buddhist silk road. Lahore holds the Mughal heritage: Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens, a World Heritage site, plus the Badshahi Mosque; Mohenjo-daro, in Sindh, is one of the largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation (2500-1500 BCE) and also a World Heritage site. Taxila preserves Buddhist monasteries and stupas from the Gandhara civilization. To the north, Gilgit-Baltistan holds peaks over 8,000 metres: including K2, the world's second-highest mountain: and valleys like Hunza, reached via the Karakoram Highway. Pakistan has 6 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises entirely against travelling to Balochistan and the former tribal areas, and flags kidnapping and attack risk in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (including Peshawar) and in Azad Kashmir: the rest of the country, including Lahore, Islamabad and the mountainous north, isn't under that advisory. The best season for the north is May to September; Lahore and Sindh are more manageable in winter given extreme summer heat.
