Qatar rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- The WHO list and Spain's Ministry of Health record no yellow fever requirement for Qatar. The UK Government's travel advice does mention the certificate for travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission, and polio vaccination in some cases: anyone coming from those countries would do well to carry it.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash, negotiable instruments, precious metals and precious stones worth more than 50,000 Qatari riyals must be declared on arrival. Breaking this rule can lead to a fine, imprisonment and seizure of the funds.
- Alcohol
- Importing alcoholic drinks is prohibited, even when bought in an airport or in-flight duty free. Alcohol may only be consumed in licensed hotels and venues.
- Tobacco
- Allowance published by the General Authority of Customs: 400 cigarettes, or instead 20 cigars, 300 grams of pipe tobacco, 500 grams of raw tobacco or 2 kilos of shisha tobacco, up to a value of 3,000 riyals. E-cigarettes and their liquids are banned and confiscated.
Overstay penalties
Anyone who needs to stay longer than 30 days must extend the visa waiver with the Ministry of Interior before it expires; otherwise they face a fine that has to be paid before leaving Qatar. We have not been able to confirm the daily amount of that fine against an official text. Pending debts count too: the authorities can stop anyone with legal proceedings, unpaid debts or unpaid traffic fines from leaving the country.
Grounds for refusal
- A passport with less than six months' validity, or one reported lost or stolen.
- Turning up with a provisional passport without a visa obtained in advance from a Qatari mission: that visa cannot be issued on arrival.
- Not carrying a return ticket or booking confirmation.
- Travelling as a tourist when the real purpose is work, business or journalism: each needs its own visa or permit.
Do you need a different visa for Doha, Al Wakrah, or Al Khor?
No. Qatar sets the requirements, so entering through Doha asks for the same as entering through Al Wakrah or Al Khor. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Qatar
Qatar is mostly Doha, and Doha is visited for its museums and for the contrast between the very new and what is left of the pearling port it once was. The Museum of Islamic Art, on an artificial island off the Corniche, is the city's most photographed building, and the National Museum, shaped like a desert rose, was added to UNESCO's tentative list in 2025. Souq Waqif, rebuilt over the old market, is the place to eat and stroll in the evening. Outside the capital, the country's only World Heritage site is Al Zubarah on the north-west coast, a walled town that lived off pearls and trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. To the south, Khor Al Adaid, the "inland sea" where the dunes run into the water, has been on the tentative list since 2008 and can only be reached by four-wheel drive, best done with someone who knows the sand. From May to September temperatures hover around 45 to 50 degrees. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that, because of the regional conflict, it currently regards every area of the country as a risk area.
