Suriname rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Spain's Foreign Ministry recommends the vaccine for anyone travelling to the interior.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Bringing in or taking out more than 10,000 US dollars, in any currency or means of payment, must be declared on declaration form H, which is free.
- Alcohol
- Duty-free and without declaring: 1 litre of spirits, 4 litres of wine and 8 litres of beer. Fruit (except reasonable amounts for personal use from the Netherlands), vegetables, plants, coffee, cocoa, rice and fish may not be brought in.
- Tobacco
- Duty-free and without declaring: 200 cigarettes, or 20 cigars, or 500 grams of tobacco. Other personal goods, up to 500 dollars.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying the entry period or working without a work permit is illegal, according to the UK Government. The amount of the penalties could not be confirmed against Surinamese law.
Grounds for refusal
- Arriving without having paid the entry fee, or without the e-Visa when your nationality requires one.
- A passport with less than six months' validity.
- Not having completed the ICF form.
- Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Paramaribo, Lelydorp, or Nieuw Nickerie?
No. Suriname sets the requirements, so entering through Paramaribo asks for the same as entering through Lelydorp or Nieuw Nickerie. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Suriname
Suriname has three properties on the World Heritage List. The historic inner city of Paramaribo, inscribed in 2002 and now on the List of World Heritage in Danger, keeps the Dutch colonial town of wooden houses by the Suriname River and Fort Zeelandia. The Central Suriname Nature Reserve, from 2000, protects a vast stretch of undisturbed rainforest, and the Jodensavanne archaeological site, from 2023, holds the remains of a Jewish plantation settlement and its cemetery. Much of the country is rainforest, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises exploring the interior with specialist agencies. It asks travellers to avoid the eastern border, especially Albina, and Paramaribo's Central Market and Palm Garden at night. The rainy season, from June to December, brings more dengue and chikungunya.
