What we've verified for Tanzania

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: visa.immigration.go.tz (Tanzania Immigration Services, "Tanzania Visa Guidelines": fees for every visa, 10-day processing, requirements, nationalities with and without visa on arrival, transit visa); tra.go.tz (Tanzania Revenue Authority, Customs (Management and Tariff) Act, passenger allowances, in PDF); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Tanzania: ports of entry, volunteering and the 600-dollar fine, Zanzibar insurance, yellow fever, risk areas, plastic bags, export of protected species); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania/entry-requirements (UK Government: overstaying, return ticket, Ebola and mpox screening, Zanzibar insurance up to 92 days); who.int (WHO): yellow fever (Spain's Ministry of Health list leaves the Tanzania entry blank); whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Tanzania rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: an international vaccination certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, and from those who have had layovers of more than 12 hours at airports in those countries. According to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, every country bordering Tanzania is a risk area.
  • Temperature checks for mpox are carried out at points of entry, and there is heightened screening for travellers arriving from Uganda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Customs limits

Alcohol
The Customs (Management and Tariff) Act published by the Tanzania Revenue Authority exempts from duty 1 litre in total of spirits or wine and half a litre of perfume and toilet water, for passengers aged 17 or over. Mainland Tanzania also applies the East African Community customs law, and we have not been able to confirm that its figures are the same. Importing and using plastic bags is prohibited and punished with a fine.
Tobacco
From the same source and with the same caveat: cigarettes, cigars, tobacco and snuff up to 250 grams in total.

Overstay penalties

Anyone who stays beyond their visa or permit can be arrested, detained and fined before being deported. Working or volunteering on a tourist visa can lead to detention, a fine of 600 dollars, deportation and a ban on re-entry. We have not found the daily overstay fine published.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than six months' validity or without a free page for the visa.
  • Not showing a return ticket on arrival.
  • Belonging to a nationality excluded from the visa on arrival and arriving without an approved visa.
  • Entering on a tourist visa to work or volunteer: that requires a business visa and a work permit.
  • Arriving in Zanzibar without the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation policy.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Zanzibar: what changes

Zanzibar runs its own immigration control, including for travellers arriving from the mainland, so you need to carry your passport. Since 1 October 2024 every non-resident visitor must also hold the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation travel policy for their whole stay (up to 92 days). Only that insurer sells it and no other international policy replaces it; without it entry can be refused. Its cover is limited, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends also carrying international insurance.

Do you need a different visa for Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, or Zanzibar?

No. Tanzania sets the requirements, so entering through Dar es Salaam asks for the same as entering through Dodoma or Zanzibar. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

With one exception, explained above: the rules for Zanzibar are not the rules for the rest of Tanzania.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Tanzania

Tanzania is the country of East Africa's great parks, and four of them are World Heritage sites. The Serengeti (1981) is the stage for the great migration of wildebeest and zebra; the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (1979) combines a volcanic crater full of wildlife with the Olduvai sites, key to understanding human evolution; Kilimanjaro (1987) is Africa's highest mountain, and Selous (1982), in the south, is one of the continent's largest reserves. On the coast, Zanzibar's Stone Town (2000) blends Swahili, Arab, Persian and European influences in its coral-stone houses and carved doors, and the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara (1981) recall the ports that dominated Indian Ocean trade. Inland, the Kondoa rock shelters (2006) hold rock paintings. Zanzibar and much of the coast are predominantly Muslim and modest dress is advisable. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against travel to the Mtwara region, on the border with Mozambique, and points out that taking ivory, cat skins, shells or animals out of the country without a permit is punished with prison.
