Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Tanzania, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Zanzibar: different entry rules

Zanzibar runs its own immigration control, including for travellers arriving from the mainland, so you need to carry your passport. Since 1 October 2024 every non-resident visitor must also hold the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation travel policy for their whole stay (up to 92 days). Only that insurer sells it and no other international policy replaces it; without it entry can be refused. Its cover is limited, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends also carrying international insurance.

Authorisation system

Tanzania electronic visa (ordinary visa)

The visa can be applied for online, which is what Immigration recommends, or on arrival at Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro airports and at the ports of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kigoma. The tourist visa is the single-entry ordinary visa, except for US citizens, who must apply for the multiple-entry visa. The real purpose of the trip must be declared: a tourist visa does not allow work or volunteering. Each traveller, minors included, files their own application, and only on the official website.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months from entry with blank pages: Immigration asks for at least one; Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends three.
  • Return ticket, to be shown on arrival.
  • Nationalities that Immigration excludes from the visa on arrival (among them Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mali, Uzbekistan, Iran, Iraq or Somalia) must obtain it online before travelling, as must refugees and stateless persons.
  • Minors travel with their own visa and with any parental consent required.

Transit rules

The transit visa costs USD 30 and lasts at most seven days. It is only for crossing Tanzania to another country, may require the destination visa or an onward ticket, and does not allow leaving through a different point from the one used to enter: anyone arriving by road from Kenya and leaving on a flight from Dar es Salaam needs a tourist visa. With the ordinary visa you can visit another East African country and return to Tanzania while it is still valid. Anyone visiting both the mainland and Zanzibar does not need a second visa: it is enough to state the first destination in the application.
