This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. Trinidad and Tobago rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission and from those who have transited through an airport in one of them. The vaccine is recommended from 9 months of age for travellers to the island of Trinidad, except when visiting only urban Port of Spain, staying on board a cruise ship or in air transit.

Customs limits

Cash
Any amount can be brought in or taken out, but cash over 20,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars in any currency must be declared (the Spanish Embassy also mentions 5,000 US dollars). The declaration is free and failing to declare is severely penalised.

Grounds for refusal

  • No return ticket.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity or reported lost or stolen.
  • Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the certificate.
  • Coming to work or study without the relevant permit or visa.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

IATI sells its policies according to the country you live in. Where do you live?

Do you need a different visa for Port of Spain, San Fernando, or Scarborough?

No. Trinidad and Tobago sets the requirements, so entering through Port of Spain asks for the same as entering through San Fernando or Scarborough. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago has no properties on the World Heritage List. Trinidad, the larger island, is home to the Port of Spain carnival and steelpan music, and its northern forest has bird reserves and beaches such as Maracas and Las Cuevas. Tobago is quieter, with reefs and one of the oldest protected forest reserves in the western hemisphere. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks travellers not to go out at night in quiet areas because of the high number of murders, to avoid the Port of Spain districts of Laventille, Belmont, Morvant, Sea Lots, Cocorite, Beetham and Carenage, and to use the highway to Piarco airport. Crime is much lower in Tobago. The country lies in a hurricane and tropical storm zone, which mainly affects Tobago, and in a high earthquake-risk zone.
