Tonga rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: required from travellers arriving from a country where the disease is present.

Customs limits

Cash
Cash or traveller's cheques above 10,000 pa'anga must be declared on the customs form, and duty may be payable. Traveller's cheques are not accepted in the country.
Alcohol
2 litres of alcoholic drinks, or 4.5 litres of wine, or 4.5 litres of beer. Other items not for sale, up to 500 pa'anga; personal valuables worth that much or more must be declared.
Tobacco
250 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco.

Overstay penalties

The consequences of an immigration offence are decided by the local authorities and can include a ban on re-entry or police action where a crime is involved, according to Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The amount of any fine could not be confirmed against Tongan law.

Grounds for refusal

  • No return or onward ticket.
  • Being unable to show funds or accommodation if asked.
  • A passport with less than six months' validity beyond planned departure.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Nukuʻalofa, Neiafu, or Pangai?

No. Tonga sets the requirements, so entering through Nukuʻalofa asks for the same as entering through Neiafu or Pangai. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Tonga

Tonga has no properties on the World Heritage List. It is an island kingdom in the South Pacific, with the capital, Nuku'alofa, on Tongatapu and the Vava'u archipelago further north, and most trips revolve around the sea and island life. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags no risk areas. It recommends insurance with repatriation, because serious medical cases are flown to Australia or New Zealand, and warns that cash machines are scarce outside Nuku'alofa.
