Which passport do you hold?

We'll take you straight to the entry requirements for Uzbekistan for your nationality.

What we've verified for Uzbekistan

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: gov.uz/en/mfa (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, "Visa to the Republic of Uzbekistan", updated 6 March 2025: consular and e-visa fees, visa-exempt countries, Annex 1 for the e-visa, Annex 2 for the five-day transit); uzbekistan.travel (Uzbekistan's official tourism portal, "Travel guideline": customs rules for individuals, declaration above 2,000 dollars); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Uzbekistan: 30-day exemption, passport validity, registration, medicines and form T-6, currency declaration, risk areas, export of antiques); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/uzbekistan/entry-requirements (UK Government: entry stamp, Emehmon registration, daily fines, duplicate declaration, drones); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; whc.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026.

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Uzbekistan rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • No vaccination is mandatory. Uzbekistan does not require a yellow fever certificate, according to the WHO and Spain's Ministry of Health.
  • Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends being up to date with tetanus-diphtheria and whooping cough, MMR, hepatitis A and B, and considering rabies and typhoid.

Customs limits

Cash
Foreign currency can be brought in without limit, but anything above 2,000 dollars must be written on the customs declaration; undeclared amounts may be confiscated. The declaration is filled in twice: one stamped copy is kept until departure, because it will be requested, and you cannot leave with more foreign currency than you declared on entry. The UK Government puts the threshold at 10,000 dollars; the official Uzbek tourism portal and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs say 2,000, which is the safe figure. Jewellery and precious metals over 65 grams must also be declared, as must medicines, even those common in Europe, on form T-6.
Alcohol
Up to 2 litres of alcoholic drinks, beer included, according to Uzbekistan's official tourism portal.
Tobacco
Up to 10 packs of tobacco products of any kind, from the same source.

Overstay penalties

Exceeding the 30 visa-free days breaches the rules on foreigners' stay and carries administrative liability: a fine and possibly deportation. Failing to register, or being unable to account for where you have been, is fined for each missing or late day and can also end in deportation. Extending the stay from inside the country is not always possible, and anyone leaving overland should reach the border in good time. We have not found the amount of the fines published in an official source.

Grounds for refusal

  • A passport with less than three months' validity from the end of the stay, or one reported lost or stolen.
  • Carrying medicines with controlled substances without declaring them or a prescription translated into Russian: tolerance for psychotropics is zero, and even a codeine cough syrup can cause trouble.
  • Arriving with a drone without an import licence.
  • Travelling for a purpose other than tourism or business, or to stay longer than 30 days, without the matching visa.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Tashkent, Samarkand, or Bukhara?

No. Uzbekistan sets the requirements, so entering through Tashkent asks for the same as entering through Samarkand or Bukhara. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is the stretch of the Silk Road that has best preserved its cities. Khiva, with its walled Itchan Kala, was the country's first site on the World Heritage List, in 1990; it was followed by the historic centres of Bukhara (1993) and Shakhrisyabz (2000) and by Samarkand (2001), the crossroad of cultures where the Registan brings three madrasas together around a single square. In 2023 the Zarafshan-Karakum corridor was added, following the caravan routes between those cities, and in 2026 Tashkent's modernist architecture. There is landscape too: the Uzbek part of the Western Tien-Shan (2016) and the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan (2023). Between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara runs the Afrosiyob high-speed train, built by Spain's Talgo, the most comfortable way to get around. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises caution in the mountains and borders with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the Fergana Valley, Andijan and the Surkhandarya region, and advises against crossing into Afghanistan under any circumstances. Taking out carpets, antiques or old books requires a permit from the Ministry of Culture.
