Verified practical details

You can get your visa on arrival in Burundi, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:

Authorisation system

Airport entry visa, with prior online validation

Visas are handled by the Commissariat Général des Migrations, part of the National Police. Before travelling, the "visa d'entrée aéroport" (or transit) application has to be filled in on its website; once it is sent, a validation certificate is issued, and it has to be shown on arrival so the visa can be issued at Bujumbura airport. Spain's Foreign Ministry asks for the online application to be made at least 15 days ahead. The tourist, transit or business visa lasts one month, with single or multiple entry.

Fee

90 USD

One-month visa, single or multiple entry. It is paid online or in cash on arrival. Dollar notes issued before 2006 or in poor condition are usually not accepted.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months from arrival, with at least one blank page.
  • International yellow fever vaccination certificate, from the age of one.
  • Printed validation certificate for the visa application made on the Commissariat Général des Migrations website.

Transit rules

Since August 2019 it has been forbidden to bring in plastic bags or plastic packaging, in checked or hand luggage. Producing, selling, transporting or possessing drugs carries 3 to 10 years in prison and a fine, and same-sex relations are a crime.
