Albania rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash over 1,000,000 lek (a little under 10,000 euros) must be declared at the border on entry and exit, together with negotiable instruments, precious metals and stones, valuables and antiques, with supporting documents and the purpose of carrying them. Failing to declare is a criminal offence punishable by a fine and up to two years in prison.
- Alcohol
- Aged 17 and over: 1 litre of drinks over 22% or 2 litres at 22% or under (including sparkling and fortified wines), plus 2 litres of still wine and 10 litres of beer. Also 3 kilograms of coffee for personal use.
- Tobacco
- Aged 17 and over: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco, or a proportional combination.
Overstay penalties
The Spanish Embassy warns that fines for exceeding the maximum length of stay are substantial. The figure could not be confirmed against the Albanian Foreigners Act.
Grounds for refusal
- Travelling on an ID card or passport reported lost or stolen, even if it was recovered.
- A document with less than three months' validity.
- Arriving from a yellow fever risk country without the vaccination certificate.
- Entering to work or for any activity other than tourism or business without the relevant visa.
Travel insurance
Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Tirana, Durrës, or Sarandë?
No. Albania sets the requirements, so entering through Tirana asks for the same as entering through Durrës or Sarandë. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Albania
Albania has four properties on the World Heritage List. Butrint, in the far south opposite Corfu, is an ancient city inhabited from Greek to Venetian times, with a theatre, baptistery and walls beside a lake. Berat and Gjirokastra are two well-preserved Ottoman towns: Berat with its white houses stepped below the citadel and Gjirokastra with its stone tower houses. Lake Ohrid, shared with North Macedonia, and the primeval beech forests complete the list. The southern coast between Vlorë and Sarandë is the other reason the country draws more and more travellers. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the whole country is in an earthquake zone and that winter floods are possible, especially in the north.
