Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Serbia, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Authorisation system

Visa exemption up to 90 days in six months (no advance formality)

Serbia is not part of the Schengen area: days spent there do not count towards the Schengen 90 days, or vice versa.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least 90 days after the planned departure from Serbia. Without a valid document entry is refused and the traveller is sent back at their own expense.
  • A document reported lost or stolen that later turned up is still listed as stolen unless the police were told it had been found: Serbian police confiscate it at the border and refuse entry.
  • An entry stamp in the passport: check that it is applied. Leaving Serbia without one can lead to illegal immigration charges.
  • Police registration within 24 hours of arrival (the "beli karton"). Hotels do it for you; in private accommodation you must go to the police station with the owner, and every change of address needs a new registration.

Transit rules

Serbia does not recognise the crossings with Kosovo as international borders. Entering Serbia from Kosovo requires a prior Serbian entry stamp, from Belgrade, Niš or Kraljevo airports or a land border with another country; without one entry is likely to be refused, and travellers coming from Kosovo usually have to go round through North Macedonia. Serbian authorities may also turn away people with Kosovo stamps in their passport, so travellers who can enter on a national ID card should carry it as well.
