Authorization system

TDAC — Thailand Digital Arrival Card (not a visa)

Mandatory for ALL foreigners entering Thailand (by air, land, or sea) since 1 May 2025, replacing the old paper TM6 card. Important: it is NOT an ETA-type travel authorization, it's an arrival card with a basic health and accommodation declaration. Free. Submitted online up to 3 days before arrival.

Fee

Free

The TDAC is free. The visa fee, when the passport's country of origin requires one, hasn't been verified.

Processing time

TDAC: less than 5 minutes. Consular visa processing time, when applicable, not verified.

Required documents

• A passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 2 blank pages, both when entering and when leaving Thailand
• A Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) submitted online within the 3 days before arrival. It is mandatory for every entry and for every nationality, including visa-exempt entry; it is free and does not replace a visa
• Proof of sufficient funds of THB 20,000 per person for visa-exempt entry
• Proof of onward travel scheduled within 30 days of the arrival date
• Proof of accommodation, which the immigration officer may ask for at the border

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for general entry. A yellow fever certificate is required from travellers over 1 year of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, or who have transited through the airport of one of those countries (any length of layover).

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

The line Thailand draws is 12 hours, and whether or not you clear immigration. If you stay inside the airport transit area and your connection is under 12 hours, you need no visa. The moment you have to clear immigration — to collect baggage, change terminal, or because the connection runs over 12 hours — a transit visa is required, unless your nationality falls under the tourist visa exemption. The TDAC follows the same logic: not needed if you do not clear immigration; required if you leave the airport.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare if cash exceeds 20,000 USD or equivalent.

Alcohol

1 liter of wine or spirits, only for those over 20.

Tobacco

200 cigarettes OR 250g of other tobacco products (cigars, pipe tobacco) — not combinable with each other, for those over 20.

Overstay penalties

Staying beyond your permitted date carries a fine of THB 500 for each day of overstay, capped at THB 20,000, a ceiling reached at 40 days. Past 90 days of overstay it stops being just a fine: it is a serious offence that leads to deportation and a ban on re-entering, for a period that depends on how long you overstayed. The exact length of each banding is not confirmed here against the Thai Immigration Bureau's own text.

Common reasons for denial

• Not holding a genuine, valid passport or a document used in lieu of one.
• Holding a valid passport but without a visa issued by a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General or by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, unless you meet the visa exemption requirements.
• Not holding the money or bond prescribed by the Minister under Section 14 of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979).
