Verified practical details

You can get your visa on arrival in Rwanda, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:

Authorisation system

Tourist visa online or on arrival

The visa can be obtained online or on arrival at the border post. Cards are usually accepted at Kigali International Airport but not at every land border, so Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends carrying cash in Rwandan francs or US dollars. There is also the East African tourist visa, multiple entry for 90 days, valid for Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda.

Fee

50 USD

Single-entry 30-day tourist visa. The 90-day multiple-entry visa costs USD 70, the East African tourist visa (Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, 90 days) USD 100 and the transit visa, up to 72 hours, USD 30.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry, with one blank page.
  • Visa obtained online or on arrival; at land borders, preferably with cash.
  • Do not bring plastic bags, which are banned and can be confiscated on arrival, or e-cigarettes and vapes.
  • Declare drones on arrival: they can be held until departure, and using one requires a special permit.

Transit rules

The transit visa covers up to 72 hours and requires leaving through the same border post you entered by; leaving through another needs a tourist visa. Because of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo there is health screening at Kigali airport and restrictions at the border with that country, and the opening hours of the Gisenyi-Goma and Cyangugu-Bukavu crossings vary.
