Authorisation system

Entry visa and exit visa, with an invitation

Libya does not issue tourist visas: only work, mission, visit or family reunification visas, always with an invitation from a Libyan legal entity processed by the Directorate General of Passports and Immigration of the Ministry of the Interior. Besides the entry visa an exit visa is needed, a stamp placed by that Directorate at the request of the inviting company. Apply a month ahead. According to the UK Government, a visa issued abroad may not be recognised in some areas or ports.

Required documents

  • Passport with at least six months' validity and no Israeli visas or stamps: with them, entry is refused.
  • An entry visa with an invitation processed in Libya, and a valid exit visa.
  • Police registration within the first week, usually done by the company or agency, according to the UK Government.

Transit rules

The usual land crossings are Ras Ajdir with Tunisia and Sallum with Egypt; Dehiba and any crossing with Chad, Niger, Algeria or Sudan require special authorisation. In Tripoli only Mitiga airport handles civilian flights, with connections to Malta, Italy, Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Niger and the Emirates. Always carry a valid passport and visas, avoid demonstrations and do not go out at night.
