A Cuban needs a visa to visit Japan, and in Cuba the Embassy of Japan in Havana handles it. An appointment is needed to be served at the counter, and appointments are requested only by email to consulado@hv.mofa.go.jp, giving each person's full name, identity card number and passport number. The embassy offers the nearest available date and confirms it by email. Appointments are personal and non-transferable, always in the morning, and no companions are allowed on the day, although several people travelling together can attend the same appointment. For tourism, business or visits to family and friends, the applicant brings a valid passport, the application form, a passport-size photo from the last six months, details of the arriving flight or ship with entry and exit dates, and proof of enough funds for the whole stay. Transit and long-stay visas are handled by phone enquiry. The embassy recommends travel insurance that covers hospital care without cash payment.

Japan has its own mechanism for transit: the transit landing permission. If you are travelling onward to a destination outside Japan, it lets you land temporarily for up to 72 hours to rest or shop in the vicinity of the port or airport of call. There is a useful variant where your itinerary is not a round trip through the same place: you may make a stop and leave Japan from another port of entry and departure near the one you arrived at, within three days.
