Verified practical details

The procedure to complete before you travel is Visa online, at an embassy or, for some travellers, on arrival. Here's what we've verified about the process:

Authorisation system

Visa online, at an embassy or, for some travellers, on arrival

A visa is needed to enter. It is requested online before travel, through the online services tab of the Immigration and Citizenship Services Authority (ICSA) website, or at a Papua New Guinea embassy or high commission. The country has reintroduced tourist or visitor visas on arrival, at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby, for certain categories of traveller, which ICSA details on its website.

Visa, e-Visa, or electronic authorisation? What's the difference →

Required documents

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the trip.
  • A visa obtained online, at an embassy or, where applicable, on arrival.
  • Proof of funds for the stay and a ticket out of the country.

Transit rules

As a rule, fruit, vegetables and animal products may not be brought in. Spain's Foreign Ministry advises against travelling with pets, which face a six-month quarantine. Airlines in the Pacific island States often cancel or delay flights, so itineraries need slack. Some areas of Bougainville island are closed to foreigners, and the land border with Indonesia is high risk because of armed clashes.
