Verified practical details

You can get your visa on arrival in Iraq, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:

Authorisation system

Electronic visa (federal Iraq and Kurdistan Region)

For federal Iraq the visa is requested from an Iraqi embassy or online, on the official app, for collection on arrival at Baghdad airport; without it airlines will not board passengers. It costs around 160 dollars, and according to the UK Government there is no longer a visa on arrival and it is valid for 60 days. The autonomous Kurdistan Region has its own electronic visa, for direct flights to Erbil or Sulaymaniyah, which is not valid for the rest of Iraq. Crossing from Kurdistan into federal Iraq without a visa is a crime.

Required documents

  • Passport with at least six months' validity.
  • A visa applied for before travel, at the Embassy or online: without it boarding is refused.
  • A return ticket or a ticket out to a third country, according to the UK Government.
  • Minors travel with a passport, visa and parental permission if not with their guardians.

Transit rules

Crossing an external border illegally, or moving from Kurdistan into federal Iraq without a visa, can lead to arrest. Spain's Foreign Ministry recommends always flying, including within the country, never travelling alone or at night, and informing the Embassy in Baghdad beforehand. According to the UK Government, anyone carrying weapons needs the relevant authority card, and visas other than visit visas require an HIV and hepatitis test within ten days of arrival.
