Verified practical details
You can get your visa on arrival in Nepal, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:
Authorisation system
Tourist visa on arrival (optional online application)
Nationalities eligible for a visa on arrival get it at Kathmandu airport or at land border posts (there, with two passport-size photos); it can also be requested at a Nepali embassy. The form can be filled in online up to 15 days ahead, and the receipt used to collect and pay for the visa at the airport. The Nepali authorities advise paying in US dollars cash, as online payment often causes long queues.

Fee
30 USD
Multiple-entry tourist visa for 15 days. The 30-day visa costs USD 50 and the 90-day visa USD 125, or the equivalent in a convertible currency. Children under 10 get it free, except US citizens.
Required documents
- Passport valid for at least six months with at least two blank pages.
- Tourist visa, on arrival or obtained beforehand from an embassy. A visa issued at a land border post requires two passport-size photos.
- At border control you may be asked for travel insurance covering medical costs and repatriation, and the address of your first night, such as a hotel booking.
- Nationalities not eligible for a visa on arrival (among them Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Afghanistan) must get it beforehand from a Nepali diplomatic mission.
Transit rules
The tourist visa can be extended at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara, for a minimum of 15 days (USD 45) plus USD 3 for each additional day, up to a maximum of 150 days' stay per calendar year. Anyone leaving Nepal on a trip to India should make sure their passport is stamped on the way out and on the way back, and anyone continuing to China must check the Chinese requirements separately.
