The tourist visa is applied for at the Algerian Embassy in Madrid or at the Consulates General in Madrid and Barcelona, by prior appointment and paid exclusively by bank card (non-refundable fee). The tourist visa is usually issued for short stays; its exact validity is set by the consulate case by case.

Fee

EUR 95.00

Consular fee published by the Algerian Consulate General in Barcelona: €95 for those over 12, €55 for children aged 6 to 12, €15 for children under 6; €115 if the visa is for a stay of more than 90 days. Card payment only, non-refundable.

Processing time

The consulate does not publish a guaranteed processing time. Apply several weeks in advance, especially in high season.

Required documents

• Valid passport.
• Confirmed hotel booking, or an invitation letter signed and legalized before the town hall in Algeria.
• Work certificate or proof of activity.
• Travel insurance with a minimum validity of 3 months and coverage that includes Algeria.
• Return flight tickets.
• All documents must be submitted in French or Spanish; if the original is in Arabic, it is attached with its translation.

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry: Algeria is not in the yellow fever risk zone and does not require an international vaccination certificate under the International Health Regulations.

Transit rules

The maximum authorized stay on each entry is 90 days, exceptionally extendable for a period that may not exceed a further 90 days; the cumulative effective time (visas plus extensions) may not exceed 180 days per year counted from the first entry. The extension is requested from the competent services of the wilaya (province) of residence at least 10 days before the legal stay period expires. Travel in the Sahara desert must be done with an authorized agency and some areas require a permit and/or escort.

Customs limits

Cash

A currency declaration is mandatory on both entry and exit from Algerian territory for any amount of €1,000 or more (or equivalent), for residents and non-residents alike. Keeping the entry declaration is essential in order to re-export unspent foreign currency. The Algerian dinar is not convertible: its import and export are forbidden, except for residents, who may enter or leave with a maximum of 10,000 dinars. Currency is changed into dinars at the airport, at banks and at the main hotels. The 2026 Finance Law tightened exchange controls for non-residents.

Alcohol

Traveler tolerance published by Algeria's General Directorate of Customs: 2 liters of wine or 1 liter of spirits (adults). The sale of alcohol is restricted within the country.

Tobacco

General Directorate of Customs traveler tolerance: 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco. Personal effects for own or family use are exempt up to a value of 150,000 dinars.

Overstay penalties

Staying beyond the authorized period without having applied for the extension at the wilaya leaves a foreigner in an irregular situation and requires regularizing the situation before being able to leave the country; it can lead to a fine and an expulsion order. A specific fine amount could not be confirmed against an official Algerian source — the consequence is reported, not a figure.

Common reasons for denial

• Holding a passport or recognised travel document with less than six months of validity.
• Not producing the documents justifying entry to the territory: an official invitation, a medical appointment, or another substantiated reason.
• Not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the whole duration of the stay.
• Not showing where you will stay: a certificate of accommodation legalised by the municipality of the place in Algeria, a hotel booking, or a travel agency attestation specifying the nature and place of travel is required.
• Not having paid the visa stamp duties.
• One useful nuance: in an emergency, the border police may exceptionally grant a regularisation visa to someone presenting themselves without a visa for legitimate and objective reasons, for instance where there is no Algerian diplomatic or consular representation in their country.
