What you need to enter Ghana with a Senegalese passport

Since 25 May 2026, Ghana requires applying for an e-Visa online at evisa.immigration.gov.gh before traveling, for most nationalities that need a visa — indicative delivery time of 72 to 96 hours by email. All nationals of African countries can enter visa-free, and those who do need one but hold an African nationality are exempt from the fee (though they must still apply for the e-Visa). It isn't confirmed whether Visa on Arrival disappeared entirely for other nationalities or remains as an emergency-only route — the immigration service's own site still lists it as a separate option.

Not confirmed against an official fee schedule (evisa.immigration.gov.gh doesn't publish the amount on its public pages); specialized press sources converge on US$260 for single entry and US$468 for multiple entries, following the system's launch on 25/05/2026. Treat as indicative until it can be confirmed directly on the portal when applying.

Required documents

• A passport valid for at least six months
• A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate: Ghana is a country at risk of transmission, so it is required of EVERY traveller, including those arriving from countries with no risk. If you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, a doctor’s medical certificate is required
• Proof of accommodation
• A return or onward ticket
• Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
• A brief explanation of the purpose of your visit
• If you are travelling on a visa on arrival, carry the approval letter when boarding, along with your passport, yellow fever certificate and onward ticket

Vaccinations

• An international certificate of vaccination against yellow fever (ICVP, "yellow card") is MANDATORY for every traveler aged 9 months or older entering Ghana, regardless of country of origin — Ghana is itself on the WHO's list of countries with transmission risk. The certificate must be stamped and signed by an authorized vaccination centre, at least 10 days before arrival; since 2016 it's valid for life. Without it, boarding can be denied at origin or you can be held on arrival.

Transit rules

Ghana's transit visa is valid for 48 hours, and a person transiting who is not a prohibited immigrant may be admitted for that maximum period. The detail that decides whether you need one is your baggage: on indirect transit — that is, where your bags are not checked straight through to your final destination — the transit visa is mandatory. You must also hold a valid visa for the country you are transiting to, be eligible to enter it, and be able to show proof of a continuous journey to that destination.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare on the Bank of Ghana's Currency Declaration Form (CDF Form 4A) if carrying foreign currency above US$1,000 (confirmed via direct fetch to the Ghana Revenue Authority, gra.gov.gh).

Alcohol

375ml of spirits and 750ml of wine duty-free (confirmed via direct fetch to gra.gov.gh) — no separate beer allowance is mentioned.

Tobacco

Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco and snuff: up to 0.5kg (one pound) total, duty-free (confirmed via direct fetch to gra.gov.gh).

Overstay penalties

Section 20 of the Immigration Act 2000 is categorical: you may not remain in Ghana once your permit has expired. If the permit is revoked while you are in the country, you cannot stay: you are removed and barred from re-entering temporarily — or permanently if you are treated as a prohibited immigrant. Anyone who enters, re-enters or remains in contravention of an order made under that section commits an offence, punishable on summary conviction by a fine of not less than one million cedis or imprisonment of not less than three months and not more than one year. That figure is the one in the 2000 Act, predating the 2007 redenomination of the cedi, so it is not equivalent to one million of today's cedis.

Common reasons for denial

• Falling into the prohibited immigrant category: the official source names a person of unsound mind, a person declared medically unsound by medical personnel, and a person considered a security risk.
• Not meeting immigration requirements at the port of entry, even with a valid visa in hand.
• Not carrying a valid yellow fever certificate: it is required of every traveller with no exemption by country of origin.
