Sources: gis.gov.gh (Ghana Immigration Service — official press release on the e-Visa launch, 25/05/2026, direct fetch); evisa.immigration.gov.gh (official e-Visa portal — 72-96h processing time, confirmed via direct fetch; fee not published, unconfirmed specialized-press figure); gra.gov.gh, Ghana Revenue Authority ($1,000 declaration threshold, alcohol and tobacco allowances, direct fetch); ghanahighcommission.co.za and the Embassy of Ghana in Washington (mandatory yellow fever certificate, WHO/IHR2005) (checked 5 September 2026).

This table summarizes the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track — the difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorization, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorization: what's the difference. Do you need a different visa for Accra, Kumasi, or Takoradi?

No. Ghana sets the requirements, so entering through Accra asks for the same as entering through Kumasi or Takoradi. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travelers to Ghana

Ghana combines the memory of the transatlantic slave trade with nature and Ashanti culture. Along the coast, 28 forts and castles — recognized as a single UNESCO World Heritage site — document that past: Elmina, built in 1482, is the oldest surviving European building in Sub-Saharan Africa; Cape Coast Castle, with its "doors of no return", is today a central site of memory for the African diaspora, driven by the government's "Year of Return" initiative. Inland, the traditional Asante buildings around Kumasi — ten mud shrines with palm-leaf roofs, also a World Heritage site — are among the few surviving examples of pre-European West African architecture. Kakum, in the Central Region, has the country's best-known canopy walkway suspension bridge. Ghana has 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The dry season (November-March) makes road travel easier.
