Verified practical details
You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:
Authorisation system
e-Visa (Ghana Immigration Service)
Since 25 May 2026, Ghana requires applying for an e-Visa online at evisa.immigration.gov.gh before travelling, for most nationalities that need a visa: indicative delivery time of 72 to 96 hours by email. All nationals of African countries can enter visa-free, and those who do need one but hold an African nationality are exempt from the fee (though they must still apply for the e-Visa). It isn't confirmed whether Visa on Arrival disappeared entirely for other nationalities or remains as an emergency-only route: the immigration service's own site still lists it as a separate option.
Apply on the official site →Processing time
72 to 96 hours (per the official evisa.immigration.gov.gh portal).
Required documents
- A passport valid for at least six months
- A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate: Ghana is a country at risk of transmission, so it is required of every traveller, including those arriving from countries with no risk. If you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, a doctor’s medical certificate is required
- Proof of accommodation
- A return or onward ticket
- Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
- A brief explanation of the purpose of your visit
- If you are travelling on a visa on arrival, carry the approval letter when boarding, along with your passport, yellow fever certificate and onward ticket
Health insurance
Not mandatory for this destination.
When travel insurance is mandatory → Travel insurance policies ↓Transit rules
Ghana's transit visa is valid for 48 hours, and a person transiting who is not a prohibited immigrant may be admitted for that maximum period. The detail that decides whether you need one is your baggage: on indirect transit: that is, where your bags are not checked straight through to your final destination: the transit visa is mandatory. You must also hold a valid visa for the country you are transiting to, be eligible to enter it, and be able to show proof of a continuous journey to that destination.

They don't depend on your passport, so they are on the Ghana page:

Travel insurance for Ghana
It isn't listed as mandatory for this entry, but without insurance, medical care during the trip can get expensive.
