Verified practical details
Verified practical details about Norway:
Svalbard: different entry rules
Svalbard sits outside the Schengen area and the Norwegian authorities do not require a visa to enter the archipelago. What does require a visa is the journey: anyone who needs a Schengen visa needs it to pass through mainland Norway on the way out and back, because the crossing between the mainland and Svalbard is a Schengen external border. The Governor of Svalbard advises applying for a visa with two entries, so you can return to the Schengen area after your stay.

Authorization system
None operational yet (ETIAS delayed)
Norway is part of the Schengen Area (though not the European Union) and therefore of the future ETIAS system (a travel authorization for nationalities exempt from a Schengen visa). As of the verification date, ETIAS is NOT operational. Once launched: cost €20, validity 3 years, applicable to passport holders from countries exempt from a Schengen visa.
Fee
Doesn't apply until ETIAS is operational. For consular Schengen visas, the fee depends on the visa type and hasn't been verified specifically for Norway.
Required documents
- A valid passport or travel document, issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen area (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(a))
- Norway sets no binding figure: border police decide case by case whether your means are sufficient, and may refuse entry to anyone who cannot evidence them (Norwegian Immigration Act, Section 17(f))
- As an indication, the authorities themselves treat around NOK 500 per day as adequate for visitors not staying with relatives or friends
- That decision weighs how long you are staying, whether you are staying with family or friends, whether you hold a return ticket and whether anyone has guaranteed your stay — bring paperwork for whichever applies to you
- Documents backing up the purpose and conditions of your stay (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(c) and Annex I)
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry: no international certificate of vaccination (yellow fever included) is required under the International Health Regulations.
Health insurance
Not mandatory for this visa-exempt entry, though it's strongly recommended. The border officer may still ask for proof of sufficient funds and accommodation for your stay — a separate requirement from insurance.
When travel insurance is mandatory →Transit rules
Schengen rule: a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area (Norway applies the same regime even though it is not an EU member).

- Cash
- There's no ban on carrying more than NOK 25,000 in cash or other means of payment (including anonymous prepaid cards), but it must be declared to Tolletaten (Norwegian Customs) before travel. Failing to declare it results in a violation fee (a real example cited by Tolletaten: a NOK 5,200 fee on NOK 26,000 undeclared, a 20% rate).
- Alcohol
- From outside the EU/EEA: 1 liter of spirits over 22%, plus 1.5 liters of wine up to 22%, plus 2 liters of beer/light wine — or equivalent combinations within the duty-free allowance. Separately, Norway also allows declaring (and paying a flat rate) up to an additional 4 liters of spirits, or up to 27 additional liters of beer/wine, under the simplified allowance for personal use. Minimum age: 20 for spirits over 22%, 18 for the rest.
- Tobacco
- 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of other tobacco products, duty-free. Separately, the simplified allowance permits declaring (and paying a flat rate) up to an additional 400 cigarettes and 500 grams of tobacco/snuff for personal use.
Overstay penalties
§ 108 of the Immigration Act (utlendingsloven) punishes intentional or negligent breaches of immigration regulations, including violating an already-active entry ban, with a fine or up to 6 months of imprisonment (up to 1 year for repeat offenses). In practice, per the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), Norway does not typically impose monetary fines for a simple overstay: from 30 days of overstay onward, the usual consequence is expulsion (utvisning), accompanied by a re-entry ban to Norway and, as a rule, to the rest of the Schengen area, of limited or permanent duration depending on the severity of the case.
Check if you'd go over the limit →Common reasons for denial
- Producing a false or falsified travel document, or reasonable doubts arising about the authenticity of the supporting documents submitted or the truthfulness of their content (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
- Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii); the same entry condition appears in Art. 6(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399, so it is also checked at the border).
- Failing to provide proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the whole intended stay and for the return to the country of origin or residence, and not being in a position to acquire such means lawfully (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)).
- Having already used up the 90 days of stay within the current 180-day period on the territory of the Member States (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
- Being the subject of an alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
- Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any Member State (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
- Failing to provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance, where applicable (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
- Reasonable doubts arising about the reliability of the statements made or about the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the visa applied for expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).

Frequently asked questions
Do Spanish citizens need a visa for Norway?
No. As a citizen of an EU/EEA/Switzerland country, you have free movement to enter and stay in Norway — this isn't a visa exemption, it's a different regime, with no tourist stay limit.
How long can I stay in Norway?
There's no stay limit for tourism: you have free movement as a citizen of an EU/EEA/Switzerland country. If you're staying to live there, you must register with local authorities after 90 days.
What minimum passport validity is required?
At least 3 months of validity from the date you enter Norway.
Is free movement the same as being visa-exempt?
No. Visa exemption is an authorization the EU grants to third countries, which can change. Free movement is a right tied to EU/EEA/Switzerland citizenship, with stronger guarantees: it includes the right to live and work, not just visit.
