How much money you need to show

NOK 300 per day if you stay with someone or in prepaid accommodation, and NOK 1,300 per day if you cannot show where you are staying

If several people travel together without proof of accommodation, it is at least NOK 1,000 per person per day. If you have booked a hotel or apartment, you need enough to pay for it as well as your other costs.

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.

Customs limits

Cash

There is no ban on carrying more than NOK 25,000 in notes, coins or other means of payment (for example, gift cards), but it must be declared to Tolletaten (Norwegian Customs): on arrival, through the red channel. Anyone who fails to declare it pays a penalty of 20% of the money they are carrying (Tolletaten's example: NOK 5,200 on NOK 26,000 undeclared).

Alcohol

Duty-free, per person and wherever you arrive from: 1 litre of drinks over 22% and up to 60%, 1.5 litres of wine (2.5% to 22%) and 2 litres of beer or alcopops. The spirits allowance can be swapped for 1.5 litres of wine or beer, and the wine for the same amount of beer. On top of that, the simplified declaration (paying a flat rate) lets you declare for personal use up to 4 more litres of spirits and up to 27 more litres of beer or wine. Importing drinks over 60% is prohibited. Minimum age: 20 for drinks over 22%, 18 for the rest.

Tobacco

Non-residents of Norway may bring in 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of other tobacco products, plus 200 cigarette papers, duty-free (residents of Norway get half that). On top of that, the simplified declaration (paying a flat rate) lets you declare up to 400 cigarettes and 500 grams of tobacco, chewing tobacco or snuff for personal use. Minimum age: 18.

Overstay penalties

Staying longer than allowed breaches the requirement to hold permission to remain in Norway (Section 55 of the Immigration Act, utlendingsloven), and Section 108 punishes that breach, whether intentional or negligent, with a fine, up to six months in prison, or both. On top of that, the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) may order the expulsion (utvisning) of anyone who has breached the Act seriously or repeatedly (Section 66). Expulsion bars re-entry to Norway and to the Schengen and EU area: the entry ban may be permanent or time-limited, never shorter than one year (Section 71).

Grounds for refusal

Apply to: Visa-free

• Not presenting a valid travel document: valid for at least three months after the intended departure and issued within the previous ten years (Art. 6(1)(a)).
• Not justifying the purpose and conditions of the stay, or not showing sufficient means of subsistence for the stay and the return (Art. 6(1)(c)).
• Having already used up the 90 days within the current 180-day period (Art. 6(1)).
• Being the subject of a Schengen Information System (SIS) alert for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 6(1)(d)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of a Schengen State (Art. 6(1)(e)).

Apply to: Visa required

• Producing a false or falsified travel document, or reasonable doubts arising about the authenticity of the supporting documents submitted or the truthfulness of their content (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 32(1)(a)(i) and 32(1)(b)).
• Failing to justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay (Art. 32(1)(a)(ii); the same entry condition appears in Art. 6(1)(c) of Regulation (EU) 2016/399, so it is also checked at the border).
• Failing to provide proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the whole intended stay and for the return to the country of origin or residence, and not being in a position to acquire such means lawfully (Art. 32(1)(a)(iii)).
• Having already used up the 90 days of stay within the current 180-day period on the territory of the Member States (Art. 32(1)(a)(iv)).
• Being the subject of an alert in the Schengen Information System (SIS) for the purpose of refusing entry (Art. 32(1)(a)(v)).
• Being considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any Member State (Art. 32(1)(a)(vi)).
• Failing to provide proof of adequate and valid travel medical insurance, where applicable (Art. 32(1)(a)(vii)).
• Reasonable doubts arising about the reliability of the statements made or about the applicant’s intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the visa applied for expires (Art. 32(1)(b)).
