Norway is part of the Schengen Area but not the European Union: the short-stay regime (90 days within any 180-day period) is the same as the rest of Schengen, though the country is not part of the EU customs union. Norway keeps its own currency, the Norwegian krone (NOK), and doesn't apply the EU's common customs tariff despite being part of Schengen.

Svalbard: what changes
Svalbard sits outside the Schengen area and the Norwegian authorities do not require a visa to enter the archipelago. What does require a visa is the journey: anyone who needs a Schengen visa needs it to pass through mainland Norway on the way out and back, because the crossing between the mainland and Svalbard is a Schengen external border. The Governor of Svalbard advises applying for a visa with two entries, so you can return to the Schengen area after your stay.

Do you need a different visa for Oslo, Bergen, or Tromso?
No. Norway sets the requirements, so entering through Oslo asks for the same as entering through Bergen or Tromso. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
With one exception, explained above: the rules for Svalbard are not the rules for the rest of Norway.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travelers to Norway
Norway is landscape: a coast of more than a thousand fjords and an Arctic north. The south-west holds the most famous fjords — the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord, both World Heritage — with Bergen as the gateway, whose Hanseatic Bryggen wharf is also on the list. Oslo, the capital, has first-rate museums (the Munch, the Fram) and new architecture by the fjord. To the north, the Lofoten islands, of peaks dropping into the sea, and Tromsø as a base for northern lights and midnight sun. Norway has 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites. A week covers Bergen, a couple of fjords and Oslo, linked by train and boat. Summer (June-August) has near-permanent light and is the best time for the fjords; winter is for auroras in the north. It is an expensive country.
