How this visa is processed
VFS Global application centre in Santo Domingo used by the Netherlands, which also takes applications for Norway
Norway has no visa application point of its own in the Dominican Republic. The Dutch Government says that its application centre in the country, run by VFS Global in Santo Domingo, also takes Schengen visa applications for Norway, as it does for Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Latvia and Luxembourg. Only residents of the Dominican Republic can apply there. The specific requirements should be checked with the Norwegian embassy. The appointment is booked on the VFS website, one per person and without intermediaries. Applicants attend in person, minors included, with the passport and documents, give fingerprints and pay the fee plus the VFS service charge. The normal fee is 90 euros, in cash and in Dominican pesos at the current rate. The Netherlands does not accept expired Dominican passports with extended validity.

Verified practical details
You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:
Svalbard: different entry rules
Svalbard sits outside the Schengen area and the Norwegian authorities do not require a visa to enter the archipelago. What does require a visa is the journey: anyone who needs a Schengen visa needs it to pass through mainland Norway on the way out and back, because the crossing between the mainland and Svalbard is a Schengen external border. The Governor of Svalbard advises applying for a visa with two entries, so you can return to the Schengen area after your stay.

Fee
€90
The €90 is the short-stay Schengen visa fee, set by Article 16 of the Visa Code (Regulation (EC) 810/2009) as amended by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1415, in force since 11 June 2024. It is not a fee set by Norway: the same amount is paid at any Schengen consulate. Children from the age of 6 and under 12 pay €45, and children under 6 are exempt. Travellers entering without a visa pay no fee at all.
Processing time
Where the trip requires a Schengen visa, the consulate must decide within 15 calendar days of an admissible application being lodged. That period may be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases, particularly where the application needs closer examination; in justified urgent individual cases the decision is taken immediately (Regulation (EC) 810/2009, Art. 23). An application may not be lodged more than six months before the intended trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before it; where the consulate requires an appointment, it is normally given within two weeks of being requested (Art. 9).
Required documents
- A valid passport or travel document, issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen area (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(a))
- Sufficient means for the stay and the return journey: border police decide case by case whether they are enough, and may refuse entry to anyone who cannot evidence them (Norwegian Immigration Act, Section 17(f))
- That decision weighs how long you are staying, whether you are staying with family or friends, whether you hold a return ticket and whether anyone has guaranteed your stay: bring paperwork for whichever applies to you
- Documents backing up the purpose and conditions of your stay (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(c) and Annex I)
How much money you need to show
NOK 300 per day if you stay with someone or in prepaid accommodation, and NOK 1,300 per day if you cannot show where you are staying
If several people travel together without proof of accommodation, it is at least NOK 1,000 per person per day. If you have booked a hotel or apartment, you need enough to pay for it as well as your other costs.
