The Dominican Republic sets its entry regime by nationality: most passports from the Americas and Western Europe enter visa-free for tourism, while other nationalities need a prior consular visa. All travelers, regardless of nationality, must complete the online E-Ticket (migration, customs, and health in one form) before entering or leaving the country: unlike Colombia's CheckMig, this one is legally mandatory.

Dominican Republic rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No mandatory vaccines for entry. The international vaccination certificate is asked of nobody: not the yellow fever one, and not even of travellers arriving from a country with risk of transmission. That is what the country has declared in the International Health Regulations list.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Declare to the General Customs Directorate (DGA) if carrying more than USD 10,000 in cash (or the equivalent); carrying it is legal as long as its origin and destination are declared, under Law 155-17 against money laundering.
- Alcohol
- 5 litres of alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, rum, whisky, or other spirits) duty-free, for adult travellers.
- Tobacco
- 20 packs of cigarettes, or 25 cigars, or 200 grams of tobacco, duty-free.
Overstay penalties
There is no penal fine or re-entry ban for exceeding the 30-day tourist stay: the Dirección General de Migración charges a tiered exit fee based on total time overstayed, payable on departure (airport or port). Official tiers: RD$3,500 (30 days to 3 months over), RD$5,600 (3-9 months), RD$7,000 (9-12 months), RD$9,100 (12-18 months), RD$11,200 (18-24 months), RD$13,300 (24-30 months), RD$15,400 (30-36 months), RD$22,400 (36-48 months), RD$28,000 (48-60 months), plus an additional RD$14,000 per full year from the sixth year onward.
Grounds for refusal
- Not having completed the E-Ticket: it is mandatory for every passenger, Dominican or foreign, entering or leaving the country, and replaces the old embarkation and disembarkation card, the customs declaration and the sworn health declaration.
- Not presenting both an inbound and an outbound ticket: required of every foreign passenger since 28 April 2023, except legal residents in the country.
- Falling under one of the non-admission grounds in Article 15 of General Migration Law 285-04, which is the legal basis on which Migración can refuse entry.

Do you need a different visa for Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, or Puerto Plata?
No. Dominican Republic sets the requirements, so entering through Santo Domingo asks for the same as entering through Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is above all a beach destination, but it has more range than it seems. Santo Domingo, the capital, keeps its Colonial Zone: a World Heritage site: the first European urban core in the Americas, with the oldest cathedral in the hemisphere. The east coast, with Punta Cana and Bávaro, concentrates the big all-inclusive resorts and white sand. But the interior and the north coast offer something else: the Samaná peninsula, where humpback whales come close in winter; the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua; and Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean at 3,100 m. The Dominican Republic has 1 UNESCO World Heritage site. A week is enough to combine Santo Domingo, Samaná and a few days on a beach. The dry season (December-April) is the most reliable; hurricane season runs August to October.
