Verified practical details

You don't need a visa to enter Norway, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:

Svalbard: different entry rules

Svalbard sits outside the Schengen area and the Norwegian authorities do not require a visa to enter the archipelago. What does require a visa is the journey: anyone who needs a Schengen visa needs it to pass through mainland Norway on the way out and back, because the crossing between the mainland and Svalbard is a Schengen external border. The Governor of Svalbard advises applying for a visa with two entries, so you can return to the Schengen area after your stay.

Authorisation system

None operational yet (ETIAS delayed)

Norway is part of the Schengen Area (though not the European Union) and therefore of the future ETIAS system (a travel authorisation for nationalities exempt from a Schengen visa). As of the verification date, ETIAS is not operational and no applications are accepted; the EU will announce the start date several months in advance. It will cost €20 (free for those under 18 or over 70) and will be valid for 3 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Required documents

  • A valid passport or travel document, issued within the previous ten years and valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen area (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(a))
  • Sufficient means for the stay and the return journey: border police decide case by case whether they are enough, and may refuse entry to anyone who cannot evidence them (Norwegian Immigration Act, Section 17(f))
  • Reference amounts Norway has notified to the European Commission: NOK 300 per person per day if you are staying with someone or in accommodation that is booked and paid for; NOK 1,300 per day if you cannot show proof of accommodation; where several people travel together, at least NOK 1,000 per person per day
  • That decision weighs how long you are staying, whether you are staying with family or friends, whether you hold a return ticket and whether anyone has guaranteed your stay: bring paperwork for whichever applies to you
  • Documents backing up the purpose and conditions of your stay (Regulation (EU) 2016/399, Art. 6(1)(c) and Annex I)

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this visa-exempt entry, though it's strongly recommended.
