Georgia rules for every passport
Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.
Vaccinations
- No vaccinations are required to enter Georgia. Tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A and B are recommended up to date.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash (national or foreign currency), cheques or securities totalling more than 30,000 lari or the equivalent in another currency must be declared to customs on entry and on exit. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that undeclared amounts may be confiscated.
- Alcohol
- Allowance published by the Georgian Revenue Service, per passenger every 30 calendar days: 1 litre of drinks of 22% ABV or more (or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% or more), or 2 litres of drinks below 22%, or a proportional combination of the two; plus 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer. Only from age 18.
- Tobacco
- Allowance published by the Georgian Revenue Service, per passenger every 30 calendar days: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 50 cigarillos, or 200 heated tobacco units, or 10 tobacco capsules, or 250 grams of other tobacco (raw tobacco excluded), or a proportional combination; or 50 ml of e-cigarette liquid. Only from age 18.
Overstay penalties
Staying beyond the authorised period is an offence punished with a fine and can end in an expulsion decision. Article 11 of the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons also allows a visa or entry to be refused to anyone banned from entering Georgia or who has not paid a fine imposed for illegal stay: the debt is still there on the next trip. The figures that circulated until 2025 (180 lari for overstays of up to three months, 360 above that) were affected by a later reform and we could not confirm the amounts in force against the official text: we prefer not to give a number.
Grounds for refusal
- Being unable to show the health and accident insurance policy of at least 30,000 lari, compulsory for every tourist since 1 January 2026.
- Being banned from entering Georgia or not having paid a fine imposed for a previous illegal stay (Article 11 of the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons).
- Turning up with an expired document, or trying to leave with a document different from the one used to enter.
- Trying to enter through Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia: these are not valid points of entry and doing so is a criminal offence under the occupied territories law.

Do you need a different visa for Tbilisi, Batumi, or Kutaisi?
No. Georgia sets the requirements, so entering through Tbilisi asks for the same as entering through Batumi or Kutaisi. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.
What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.
What draws travellers to Georgia
Georgia has become one of the fashionable destinations in the Caucasus thanks to an unusual combination: high mountains at moderate prices, a cuisine with a strong identity of its own, and 8,000 years of winemaking recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Tbilisi, with its wooden balconies, sulphur baths and the Narikala fortress, works as a base; Mtskheta, the ancient capital half an hour away, preserves the historical monuments inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1994, the same year as Gelati Monastery in Imereti, with its Byzantine mosaics. The third cultural site is Upper Svaneti (1996), a valley of medieval defensive towers at the foot of the Caucasus and the best base for high-mountain walking; the fourth, and only natural one, is the Colchic Rainforests and Wetlands, inscribed in 2021 on the Black Sea coast. Those are the country's four World Heritage sites. To them add the cave city of Vardzia, carved out in the 12th century; Kazbegi and its Trinity church at 2,170 metres with the volcano behind; and Kakheti, the wine region, where wine is still fermented in qvevri, clay jars buried in the ground. Georgia is cheap, but two things are worth remembering: health insurance has been compulsory since 2026, and Abkhazia and South Ossetia are outside Tbilisi's control and cannot be entered from Russia.
