Verified practical details
You don't need a visa to enter Georgia, but here are some practical details worth knowing before you travel:
Authorization system
Georgia e-Visa
A Spanish passport needs neither a visa nor an electronic authorization: Ordinance No. 255 of the Government of Georgia, of 5 June 2015, lists the Kingdom of Spain (item 31 of the annex) among the countries whose citizens may enter and stay in Georgia without a visa for one full year. The e-Visa portal exists for nationalities that do need a visa.
Apply on the official site →Fee
There is no fee for a Spanish passport, which enters without a visa. What does cost money, since 1 January 2026, is the compulsory health and accident insurance, bought separately and covering a minimum sum of 30,000 lari.
Required documents
- Valid passport or national ID card: Georgia admits Spanish travellers with the national ID card, although Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends travelling with a passport because it is needed for procedures inside the country. Enter and leave with the same document to avoid problems at border control.
- A valid health and accident insurance policy, on paper or in electronic form, written in Georgian or English, with minimum cover of 30,000 lari for the whole period of stay, arrival and departure days included. It may be issued by a Georgian or a foreign insurer and must state the parties to the contract, the covered territory, the subject matter of the insurance, the start and end dates, the insured risks, the sum insured and the premium.
Vaccinations
- No vaccinations are required to enter Georgia. Tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A and B are recommended up to date.
Transit rules
Stay of up to one full year without a visa on a Spanish passport (Ordinance 255/2015). There is also a second route, Ordinance 256, for people who are not nationals of one of those countries but do hold a visa or a residence permit from one of them — Spain included: they may enter without a visa for 90 days in any 180-day period. Important warning: entering Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia is illegal under Georgia's occupied territories law and can carry prison sentences of up to five years; the crossings into those territories are not valid points of entry into Georgia.
Customs limits
- Cash
- Cash (national or foreign currency), cheques or securities totalling more than 30,000 lari or the equivalent in another currency must be declared to customs on entry and on exit. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that undeclared amounts may be confiscated.
- Alcohol
- Allowance published by the Georgian Revenue Service, per passenger every 30 calendar days: 1 litre of drinks of 22% ABV or more (or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80% or more), or 2 litres of drinks below 22%, or a proportional combination of the two; plus 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer. Only from age 18.
- Tobacco
- Allowance published by the Georgian Revenue Service, per passenger every 30 calendar days: 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 50 cigarillos, or 200 heated tobacco units, or 10 tobacco capsules, or 250 grams of other tobacco (raw tobacco excluded), or a proportional combination; or 50 ml of e-cigarette liquid. Only from age 18.
Overstay penalties
Staying beyond the authorized period is an offence punished with a fine and can end in an expulsion decision. Article 11 of the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons also allows a visa or entry to be refused to anyone banned from entering Georgia or who has not paid a fine imposed for illegal stay: the debt is still there on the next trip. The figures that circulated until 2025 (180 lari for overstays of up to three months, 360 above that) were affected by a later reform and we could not confirm the amounts in force against the official text: we prefer not to give a number.
Common reasons for denial
- Being unable to show the health and accident insurance policy of at least 30,000 lari, compulsory for every tourist since 1 January 2026.
- Being banned from entering Georgia or not having paid a fine imposed for a previous illegal stay (Article 11 of the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons).
- Turning up with an expired document, or trying to leave with a document different from the one used to enter.
- Trying to enter through Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia: these are not valid points of entry and doing so is a criminal offence under the occupied territories law.
