What draws travelers to Guatemala

Guatemala concentrates the Maya legacy more densely than any other country in the region. Tikal, deep in the Petén jungle, is the largest excavated Maya city, with temples rising above the canopy and abundant wildlife (jaguars, tapirs); it's a mixed (cultural and natural) World Heritage site. Antigua Guatemala, the colonial capital until 1776 and rebuilt several times after earthquakes, keeps its layout almost intact — also a World Heritage site. Quiriguá holds the tallest carved stelae in the Maya world, and Tak'alik Ab'aj (inscribed in 2023, the most recent) shows the transition between Olmec culture and the early Maya. Beyond the Maya legacy, Lake Atitlán — ringed by volcanoes and Indigenous villages — and the turquoise pools of Semuc Champey are the other two big draws. Guatemala has 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs flags an active state of prevention against organized crime in several departments and recommends booking organized tours and travel insurance with repatriation coverage — check the specific security situation of each area before moving around independently, especially in Alta Verapaz (Cobán, Semuc Champey). The dry season (November-April) is the best time to travel.
