What we've verified for Uganda

Beyond the yes/no matrix, we've checked these against an official primary source (last checked 23 September 2026). The specifics depend on your nationality: open your passport's row in the table for the detail that applies to you.

Sources: immigration.go.ug (Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, "Tourist Visa; single entry": USD 50 fee, authorisation validity, documents, language); visas.immigration.go.ug (official application portal); exteriores.gob.es (travel advice of Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for Uganda, updated 1 September 2026: visa required and not issued at the border, East African visa, USD 30 daily fine, vaccinations, security); gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/uganda (UK Government: barcode authorisation letter, USD 100 East African visa, Entebbe airport, DRC border); who.int (WHO) and sanidad.gob.es (Spain's Ministry of Health, "Listado de países"): yellow fever; data.unesco.org (World Heritage List). All checked on 23 September 2026. Also: ura.go.ug (Uganda Revenue Authority, "Passenger Baggage": East African Community Customs Management Act allowances and cash reporting, 25 September 2026).

This table summarises the exact entry mechanism for every passport we track. The difference between entering visa-free, with an electronic authorisation, with an e-Visa, or with a traditional visa is explained in visa, e-Visa, and electronic authorisation: what's the difference. How we verify every row before publishing it is on methodology.

Uganda rules for every passport

Vaccinations, customs limits and penalties are the same for every traveller.

Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever: the WHO and Spain's Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs record the certificate as required from travellers over one year of age arriving from, or having transited through, a country with risk of transmission. The UK Government lists it as an entry requirement for everyone and warns that the visa portal may ask for it, so carry it.
  • The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends yellow fever vaccination and vaccines against typhoid, hepatitis A and B, tetanus and diphtheria, polio and cholera, as well as malaria prophylaxis.

Customs limits

Cash
Anyone entering Uganda with more than 1,500 currency points (about 30 million shillings, around 9,000 US dollars) in any currency must report it to the Revenue Authority on arrival, and anyone taking that amount out must notify it before leaving.
Alcohol
Aged 18 and over, duty-free under the East African Community Customs Management Act: 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of wine.
Tobacco
Aged 18 and over: cigarettes, cigars, cheroots, cigarillos, tobacco and snuff up to 250 grams in total.

Overstay penalties

Anyone remaining in Uganda after their visa has expired pays a fine of 30 US dollars per day.

Grounds for refusal

  • Arriving at the border without the authorisation letter: visas are no longer issued on arrival without it.
  • Travelling after the authorisation's 90-day validity has expired.
  • A passport valid for less than six months.
  • Supporting documents that are not in English.

Travel insurance

Each destination decides whether to require insurance, and some check it at the border. If yours does, make sure the policy covers the whole trip.

Do you need a different visa for Kampala, Entebbe, or Jinja?

No. Uganda sets the requirements, so entering through Kampala asks for the same as entering through Entebbe or Jinja. If you're arriving overland or through a small border post, check that separately: some countries apply their own rules to specific crossings.

What does change is where you file the application when a visa is needed, and that depends on the country you live in rather than the city you're travelling to.

What draws travellers to Uganda

Uganda has three properties on the World Heritage List. Two are natural, inscribed in 1994: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The third is cultural, the Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi, in Kampala (2001). Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks travellers to take extreme caution: it considers the risk of attacks very high, national parks included, recalls the October 2023 attack in Queen Elizabeth National Park in which two tourists died, and advises against the border area with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For other parks it recommends checking first with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and always visiting with official guides.
