China visa requirements for Dominican citizens

Dominicans need a visa for mainland China and there is no visa on arrival. The corridor-specific point is how new the relationship is: China and the Dominican Republic only established diplomatic relations in May 2018, when Santo Domingo stopped recognising Taipei, so the Embassy of China in Santo Domingo is one of the youngest Chinese consular missions in Latin America and the only place the visa is processed in the country. The procedure is the standard one for Chinese missions: the application is first completed online in China's COVA system (consular.mfa.gov.cn), the form is printed with its barcode and handed in with the passport at the Consular Section; some applicants are fingerprinted. The application should be filed at least three weeks in advance and less than 90 days before travel. The exact fee for a Dominican passport could not be verified against an official tariff published by the embassy in Santo Domingo, so it is left unstated; confirm it directly with the Consular Section.

Hong Kong and Macao: different entry rules

Hong Kong and Macao run their own immigration control and their own list of exemptions, so a Chinese visa does not get you into either. Hong Kong's Immigration Department requires a visa or entry permit from anyone without right of abode there who wants to stay longer than their visa-free period allows. Going back to the mainland from either counts as a fresh entry into China and needs a Chinese visa again.

Authorization system

E-Arrival Card — not a visa

Since 20 November 2025 it can be completed online before traveling, via the official "NIA 12367" app, its WeChat/Alipay mini-program, or by scanning the QR code at the border checkpoint. Free. The National Immigration Administration itself has announced it is studying the introduction of a real e-Visa (still in a study/pilot phase as of the verification date, not confirmed as operational). 50 countries have a visa exemption of up to 30 days (list updated as of 17 February 2026 according to the source); verify whether the passport's country of origin is on that list before assuming a visa is needed.

Fee

Depends on the visa type if the passport's country of origin isn't on the 30-day exemption list; specific fee not verified.

Processing time

For extension, replacement and reissuance of visas and stay permits applied for inside China, the processing period is no more than 7 working days from the date the application is accepted.

Required documents

• A valid passport or other international travel document
• A duly completed visa, stay permit or residence permit application form
• A photograph meeting the requirements in the Guidelines for Travel Documents’ Photographs
• Materials relating to the purpose of the application

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for general entry. A yellow fever certificate is required from travellers over 9 months of age arriving from a country with risk of transmission, or who have transited through the airport of one of those countries (any length of layover).

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

China runs a visa-free transit of up to 240 hours (10 days) for nationals of a group of countries that the National Immigration Administration widens from time to time. To use it you need an ordinary passport and an onward ticket to a third country or region with a confirmed date and seat, and you must enter through one of the 65 designated ports, spread across 24 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. During those ten days you may travel, do business, and make visits including to family, but working, studying or reporting news still require prior approval and the matching visa. One duty that is easy to miss: if you are not staying in a hotel (which registers you itself), you or your host must register your accommodation with the police within 24 hours of arrival, in person or through the NIA's online channels. Failing to do so draws a warning and a fine of up to CNY 2,000.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare foreign currency if it exceeds 5,000 USD (or equivalent) or 20,000 CNY.

Alcohol

1.5 liters of alcoholic beverages above 12° proof.

Tobacco

400 cigarettes or 100 cigars, duty-free on both entry and exit.

Overstay penalties

500 CNY per day, up to a maximum of 10,000 CNY, with no grace period. Overstays of 1-2 days: go to the local Public Security Bureau (PSB) to explain the situation — in that case the fine may not be applied. Long overstays (roughly more than 1 month): possible detention of 5 to 15 days, repatriation, and a re-entry ban of 5 to 10 years.

Common reasons for denial

• Not holding valid exit/entry documents, or refusing or evading border inspection.
• The authority forming the view that you may engage in activities in China that do not match the type of visa you hold.
• Falling under one of subparagraphs 1 to 4 of the first paragraph of Article 21, including having knowingly falsified information during the application.
• Any other ground for refusal provided by law or administrative regulation. One thing worth knowing: the law expressly states that border inspection authorities are NOT required to give reasons for refusing entry.
