What you need to enter Uruguay with a Salvadoran passport

Fee

Tourist entry has no fee for the passports we track (no paid electronic authorization system like an ETA/eVisa). No official fee has been located for the temporary stay extension before the National Migration Directorate.

Required documents

• A national identity document (cédula) if you are a national of a Mercosur or associated State — Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru or Venezuela — or a valid passport in any case
• A document certifying you as a tourist, issued by the migration authority on arrival
• Tourist status covers stays of between 24 hours and three months, extendable by the migration authority

Vaccinations

• No mandatory vaccines for entry: no international certificate of vaccination (yellow fever included) is required under the International Health Regulations.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

Initial 90-day tourist stay, extendable once for another 90 days (180 days per year maximum) through the National Migration Directorate, filed before the initial period expires. As a founding Mercosur member, Uruguay also allows citizens of the bloc's member and associate countries to enter with just their national ID card, without a passport.

Customs limits

Cash

Declare to the National Customs Directorate if carrying more than US$10,000 in cash, precious metals or other monetary instruments; failure to do so can be fined up to the undeclared amount.

Alcohol

Duty-free allowance of up to 6 liters of distilled alcoholic beverages of non-Mercosur origin for travelers entering the country.

Tobacco

Duty-free allowance of up to 4 cartons of cigarettes of non-Mercosur origin for travelers entering the country.

Overstay penalties

Migration Law No. 18,250 (Art. 51) establishes staying beyond the authorized period as grounds for expulsion, but before applying it the National Migration Directorate must first issue a warning giving 60 days to regularize the situation (Art. 52). The law doesn't set a specific monetary fine for tourists in an irregular situation; it does set fines of 4 to 400 Readjustable Units for transport companies and other violators of migration rules (Art. 69).

Common reasons for denial

• Falling under one of the impediments in Articles 45 and 46 of Law 18,250: among them, having been charged or convicted of intentional common crimes which, under the law of the country where they were committed, carry custodial sentences of more than two years.
• There is an exception worth knowing, and the law puts it in categorical terms: border personnel — land, sea, river or air — are forbidden from preventing the entry of anyone who states an intention to apply for refuge, even where they lack the required documentation or it is visibly forged or altered.
• And another in the traveller’s favour: Article 44 allows conditional entry to be authorised for someone who does not meet the requirements, where exceptional humanitarian reasons, public interest, or compliance with international commitments apply.
