Verified practical details
You'll need to apply for a visa at a consulate or embassy before travelling. Here are the practical details we've verified:
Authorisation system
Entry visa from the Ministry of Home Affairs
The visa is requested at the Ministry of Home Affairs headquarters or at Eswatini's diplomatic missions, which need the original passport but accept applications lodged by travel agents, immigration practitioners or courier services. The Ministry is piloting an electronic visa and says visas on arrival are suspended: the visa has to be in the passport before departure, and anyone arriving without one is refused entry and sent back on the first available transport. A tourist visa covers one month at most; longer stays, study or work need a temporary residence permit.
Apply on the official site →Required documents
- Passport valid for at least three months from the date of entry, with at least two blank pages. If the trip continues to South Africa or Mozambique, four more blank pages are needed.
- Return or onward ticket, or proof of sufficient funds.
- A visa granted before travel, with two photographs, a signed statement of the purpose and length of the visit and proof of financial means (bank statements, payslips, an undertaking from the host, a bursary, medical cover or cash).
Transit rules
Traffic drives on the left. Car hire firms usually ask for one year of driving experience and an international driving permit. The legal limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, and police run random checks, with fines or prison. Anyone entering in a foreign-registered vehicle pays a road fund levy at the border (150 emalangeni for a car and 80 for a motorcycle, according to the UK Government) and must carry the receipt. The 13 border posts usually open from 6:00 to 18:00.
