Verified practical details

You can get your visa on arrival in Laos, but it's worth preparing the paperwork ahead of time:

Authorisation system

Lao eVisa and Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF)

A Lao visa is available in three ways: the electronic visa at laoevisa.gov.la, the visa on arrival or a visa from a Lao embassy. The electronic visa is only accepted at nine entry points, and most land crossings accept neither a visa on arrival nor an electronic visa. In addition, every foreigner must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) within three days before arrival and before departure at Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports and at Friendship Bridge I; at other crossings it is filled in on paper.

Fee

The official electronic visa portal does not publish the fee in its FAQs, and we have not found it in another official source. The electronic visa fee is not refundable under any circumstances, not even when entering through a non-designated post and having to pay for a visa on arrival as well.

Processing time

3 working days for the electronic visa, according to the official laoevisa.gov.la portal. It can be requested at most 60 days and at least 5 days ahead.

Required documents

  • Passport valid for more than 180 days from arrival with at least two blank pages: airlines will not let you board without them.
  • Visa, electronic, on arrival or from an embassy. For the electronic visa: a colour copy of the passport data page, a 4 x 6 cm photo on a white background and the printed approval letter. You must enter on the same passport you applied with.
  • The Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) within three days before arrival and before departure, or the paper form where it does not apply.
  • Make sure your passport is stamped on entry, to avoid problems on departure. Children and infants also need their own visa.

Health insurance

Not mandatory for this destination.

Transit rules

The electronic visa is single-entry, valid for 60 days from approval, and allows a 30-day stay from arrival. It is accepted at Wattay (Vientiane), Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Lao-Thai Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, the Boten crossing and the Boten and Khamsavath (Vientiane) railway stations. Anyone entering elsewhere must get a visa on arrival, if that post issues one, or bring one from an embassy. Since 1 January 2025 the tourist visa can be extended twice inside the country, for up to 60 more days, at the immigration office in Vientiane.

It isn't listed as mandatory for this entry, but without insurance, medical care during the trip can get expensive.
